Kansas Reports from Hunters

November 9, 2013 - Hunting close to Sylvan Grove - went bird hunting around sylvan grove. seen 1 cock and 4 hens, 1 rabbit. not much this year again. I talked to 4 groups of hunters, and they did not see anything. I did hear a total of 8 shots for a half day. maybe Kansas should close the season temporary

November 16, 2011 - Hunting at Cheney - I have only posted in the fishing section before but I wanted to share this. Went bird hunting around Cheney lake on opening day Saturday. I took my 3 young kids with me to make thing interesting. They had never been hunting before so I was really wanting them to see something. I first took them to a spot on the east side where I have seen quail several times before. We found nothing. Headed to a second spot on the east side where I has also seen quail in the past. Nothing there either other than LOTS of other hunters. I began thinking we wouldn't get anything because there were a lot of people around. I took the kids to a place where they could shoot their BB gun at some old cans and they had a blast! I told them I had one more spot to try where I had seen a couple pheasant last year. We walked and walked and then finally... a pheasant got up right under my feet! I missed the first shot but got it on the second one. It was a really long shot and I was shocked to see it falling to the ground. We were all so happy! What a great way to end a morning of hunting! Hopefully people start posting here more! Thanks!

September 7, 2009 - Dove Hunting - SEPT 6 09 - WENT DOVE HUNTING OUT  BY MCPHERSON HAD A BLAST TO SAY THE LEAST, ONE OF THE BEST AFTERNOON HUNTS I HAVE HAD.

CANT WAIT FOR DEER SEASON. GOOD LUCK

CATFISH HUNTER

January 11, 2007 - Bowfishing Question - I SPEND A GREAT DEAL OF THE HOT SUMMER BOWFISHING. BUT I DON'T HEAR A LOT ABOUT CLUBS OR EVENTS. I LIVE IN IOLA KANSAS SO IF ANY BODY KNOWS OF ANYTHING PLEASE LET ME KNOW. IF MY EMAIL IS MESSED UP PLEASE CALL 1 620 365 0175 THANK YOU

December 13, 2006 - Pheasant Reports? - Does anyone have any pheasant reports? I'm planning a last season trip to the Kiowa county area. Thanks. SAH

December 1, 2006 - Deer caught on cam - The picture of the deer below I did get a shot at and hit it real high. We looked for hours but never found the deer or a blood trail. The arrow only had hair and small bits of meat on it. I'm sure the deer lived and is not suffering! Me on the other hand is suffering tremendously! I can't sleep at night thinking about what I should have done differently. I guess those things will happen to all hunters. Anyway here is another buck that showed up the other morning and has been hanging around. My son has a rifle permit, so he may get a shot at it, if not I'll be back in a tree after rifle season with my bow. If we get one well post it. Love to see others post their deer harvest, and stories.

November 4, 2006 - Deer caught on cam - Here is a good deer I caught on my cam last week. Hope to put him on the wall. Just looking at the picture makes me shake a bit.

September 8, 2006 - Answer to question about Pond Fishing Dove Reference - We hunted in a Barton County sunflower field. Friday the 1st was great, but a cold front that came in Friday night must have moved them out and shut the fishing off as well.

September 7, 2006 - Question about Pond Fishing Dove Reference - I realize this should probably go on the hunting reports, but I was curious what part of the state Denny G. was hunting in. I've heard nothing but poor reports so far for southcentral Ks.

September 6, 2006 - Pond Fishing after Dove Hunting - 9-1-06 - After an exceptional day of dove hunting, we wound up the day by some catfishing. Frogs usually are the ticket on this pond but they just couldn't resist the Sonny's dip bait.Caught 2 in just 10 minutes! Something they hadn't had before I suspect. This was my son's favorite part of the trip!

January 2, 2006 - Leqavenworth - On the last day of the bow season I had my stand set in an area where I had seen lots of deer activity earlier during the rut.  I hunted hard the whole bow season and passed on some smaller bucks and had even missed a smaller eight pointer from the same stand.  With an hour left in the season the biggest buck I've seen this year walks out and the rest is history.  It pays to "stick" with it.   The deer was harvested at Fort Leavenworth, KS.

November 4, 2005 - Wichita Area - Went pheasant/quail hunting on SUN south of Wichita. Saw lots of pheasants and five very large coveys of quail. Dogs had trouble smelling them due to the dry conditions but three of us managed to shoot two pheasants and fourteen quail. Lots of birds this year. Good luck.

November 12 & 13, 2005 - Ellinwood - Saturday was VERY windy! The birds didn't want to fly. I'm sure we walked over a bunch.
Sunday was a beautiful day, but the birds were really running in the milo. This was my son Paul's first experience with pheasants and he had a ball! The funniest thing was this little 8 yr. old running down a downed bird in a wheat field that popped back up when he ran up to get him. He zigged and zagged it was hilarious but Paul finally got him. Needless to say he was the hero. He will remember that for a lifetime. Be sure to take your kids hunting and fishing!

November 4, 2005 - Andover Area - I couldn't pass on this buck. I shot it Friday morning at 7am. Not as big as last year but I'm not complaining!

November 11, 2004 - Butler County Buck - This is the buck I shot on 11/6/04 in butler county. He's not a monster but, he's a nice deer and the biggest one I have ever shot. He's 13pts and had 4
broken points or he would of been 17pts. Shot him at about 20 yards as he chased a doe by me. The long tine in the back is 16 1/4 inches long!

November 4, 2004 - Ducks in Durham AreaWent duck hunting on a pund around the Durham area. There was three of us hunting. We ended up with 11 ducks. We shot 2 Mallards, 1 Greenwing teal, ! shovler. 4 Gadwalls, 3 RingNecks. The hunting was great. Todd Becker

October 28, 2004 - Andover Area - I shot this Buck following a hot doe last night at 6:15. It's my biggest buck with a bow so far,18 points and 270lbs not field dressed. The one I have on the trail cam below will have to wait till next year. It will take that long for my heart to start beating correctly again! There is nothing like bow hunting in Kansas!!

October 19, 2004 - Durham Area -
Look at the buck I got on my trail cam, if I get lucky I'll be clearing a spot on the wall for him! The rut is just around the corner, and I can't sleep at night thinking about it!

January 15, 2004 - Augusta, Cheney Lake and Slate Creek - Didnt know the hunting page was even available until tonight or i wouldve been posting a lot earlier. Anyway been doing a lot of duck hunting around Augusta, Cheney Lake and Slate Creek. We had overall pretty good success , but like anything had a few days with little to no action, New Years eve me and a buddy hit slate creek and we ended up with 8 ducks, 1 gw teal and the rest mallards, coulda had our limits if we could shoot worth a damn. Was an awesome hunt none the less, we got about 40 mallards to decoy and i got my first triple. i'll be going out to the Plains, Kismet, Liberal area for some pheasants this weekend, let ya know how we do when we get back. Have fun, be safe! Shawn

January 14, 2004 - Burton Area Jan. 10 - Myself and 5 others went hunting early Saturday morning, we all talked about it being late in the year and it may be tough getting close to the birds. It wasn't! By noon we had bagged 17 pheasants and 1 quail. We must have seen 150-200 birds! What a hunt. Snag

January 5, 2004 - North of Durham - I went out yesterday afternoon, hunting north of Durham, we shot 4 roosters bewteen the 4 of us. Some of the birds where holding pretty tight and some where running. Right now the hunting for the roosters should be good, because it is getting cold and the birds should be holding tight.

December 28, 2003 - North of Durham - I am a guide with NorthCottonwood outfitters. Went out with a client from Arkansa. We hunted north of Durham, Kansas last weekend.Between the four we shot 7 pheasants and 5 quil. We saw at least 50birds. We ran into 2 coveys that had about 20 birds in each on. The day was
pretty good, but the birds was running wild. Todd Becker North Cottonwood Outfiitters

December 4, 2003 - Reno County -I will be hunting in Reno and surrounding counties for pheasant and quail on the week of 12-8 through 12-12. Can anyone let me know if the conditions are favorable for the birds and if there are any there? Thanks

November 19, 2003 - Reply to Rush and Pawnee Counties - Thanks for the reply about Rush and Pawnee Counties. Our trip is this weekend, we're leaving Friday night. It looks like the weather will be interesting, earlier in the week they were calling for temps in the low 70's, that's not good! This morning they were saying 60 with rain, hopefully it will turn out a little more favorable for hunting. I went quail hunting here in Greenwood County on Sunday and found one good covey and another small one. I was by myself and managed to get 5 birds. They were really holding well for it being so hot. SAH

November 19, 2003 - Reply to Rush and Pawnee Counties - HERES THE ANSWER TO THE GUY WHO IS GOING TO PHEASANT HUNT IN RUSH AND PAWNEE COUNTIES. WAIT 3 OR 4 MORE WEEKS!!!!!!! I HUNTED IT ON 11/15/03.THE BIRDS ARE THERE BUTTTTT. TWO THINGS NEED TO HAPPEN AND IT SHOULD BE GOOD HUNTING.1ST THEY NEED RAIN, SNOW, SLEET. ANYTHING IT IS EXTREMELY DRY.THE DOGS CAN'T SMELL ANYTHING AND THE GROUND CRUNCHES AND THE PHEASANTS KNOW YOUR COMING.THEY GET UP 100 TO 200 YARDS AHEAD.2ND THERE IS PROBABLY 90% OF MILLOW STILL STANDING. GUESS WHERE THE PHEASANTS WENT. WAYNE

November 17, 2003 - Gray County - Went pheasant hunting with about 13 others on 11-15-03 and hunted from about 9:00 until about 1:00. We ended up with 35 pheasants. The birds were holding really well considering the warm weather and light breeze. Also noticed several trees that had been scraped by deer. Looks like the rut is really getting started.

November 14, 2003 - Rut in Reno County - in the last seven days i have just started seeing rubs scrapes and some chasing aoundr pretty prairie, i think its just starting out here i have heard of lots of cahsing up north but i think well have yet to peak - rick

November 13, 2003 - Greenwood County - I went to the public hunting areas in Greenwood County. I only found two coveys of birds on opening day, but all the places I hunted had been walked already except for the two where I found birds. There was about 20 birds in each covey. My brother, father and I went back again on Tuesday and found three coveys this time. It was 65+ degrees out and was very hard for the dogs to smell anything. We ended up with 28 quail after two days and about 20 miles of walking. We have a pheasant trip planned in a few weeks, can anyone give a pheasant report on Rush and Pawnee Counties? Thanks and be safe! SAH
