Region 1 Waterfowl Report Summary
State Reports Last Checked March 20, 2008 at 9:28 a.m.

This week 12/13/07 numerous ducks and geese are in the region on reservoir areas. Shallow areas are frozen but ducks and geese are loafing on the lakes and feeding mostly on private lands nearby. Early zone closed 12/10 but opens again the 15th.

GLEN ELDER - Last Updated: 3/7/2008
Waterfowl numbers Birds have been moving in as weather warms and ice melts. 51,500 Light Geese. EXCELLENT waterfowl viewing opportunities. 158,000 total ducks using flooded vegetation. 82,000 total geese
Water level 6.2ft. below conservation pool and rising slowly.
Hunting conditions All ice is gone from lake and rivers. Most of the snows staying on the south side. Vegetation is flooded on shorelines and up rivers.
Expected hunting success Good. Geese are moving all directions to feed on private and public lands.
Comments Light Geese (Snows/Blues and Ross) Conservation Season open til April 30.

JAMESTOWN - Last Updated: 3/18/2008
Waterfowl numbers 1,000 light geese and 500 dark geese and numerous ducks using in the southwest corner of Gun Club Marsh. Numbers vary daily.
Water level Low. Gamekeeper has filled the channels but still low. Gun Club east empty except for creek and drainage channels. Gun Club west with 6" of water and draining.
Hunting conditions Good on private land and on the area. Crop fields and dry. Some hunting opportunities available in the west side of Gun Club.-
Expected hunting success Poor on the wildlife area and private land. Most geese trading between Lovewell Reservoir and the Rainwater Basins in Nebraska
Comments Refuge no longer in effect. Large pools still being held low for area renovation. Take a novice hunting during this conservation season!

LOVEWELL - Last Updated: 3/18/2008
Waterfowl numbers Less than 1,000 light geese, 500 mallards and other ducks, 300 Canada and white fronts. Light geese numbers down significantly!.Waterfowl loafing in the reservoir southwest of the Cedar Point area of the state park.
Water level 100% open. Reservoir is 0.69 ft below conservation pool.
Hunting conditions Field hunting poor on the area and poor on private land with the recent precipitation. Crop fields are open but muddy. Boat ramps open. Shoreline cover is good and can conceal hunters.
Expected hunting success Poor. Geese feeding on private lands in Kansas have left the area and moved into Nebraska's Rainwater basin.
Comments Refuge no longer in effect.Water levels are expected to remain slightly below conservation pool for the remainder of the season. Take a novice hunting during this conservation season.

NORTON - Last Updated: 3/19/2008
Waterfowl numbers 200 Light geese.
Water level Sebelius Reservoir is 16.2 feet below conservation pool.
Hunting conditions Reservoir is open.
Expected hunting success Poor due to low numbers.
Comments Light Goose Conservation Order runs Feb. 18 thruough April 30.

SMOKY HILL/ KANOPOLIS - Last Updated: 1/30/2008
Waterfowl numbers 200 ducks, mostly puddle ducks, 450 Canada geese using lake mid-day and feeding in adjacent cropfields
Water level 1.69 feet above conservation pool- lake mostly frozen over
Hunting conditions fair, most of flooded vegetation has decomposed leaving bare shoreline in most places.
Expected hunting success fair
Comments Kanopolis Reservoir is in the Low Plains Late duck zone. Remember the refuge area on the northwest part of the lake is closed to hunting except by Special Hunt permit Oct 1-March 1.

WEBSTER - Last Updated: 2/11/2008
Waterfowl numbers 5,000 to 6,000 Canada geese.
Water level 21 feet below conservation level, this is six feet higher than last year.
Hunting conditions Good flooded vegetation along South shoreline and Western end of reservoir.
Expected hunting success fair
Comments

Reservoior is 80% covered with ice. Only holes are held open by waterfowl in refuge. Birds are flying out to feed mornings and evenings.

Refuge modified for current water levels. Big boats access to west end is restricted thru refuge from east, west end of reservoir access improved for walk in and small craft north of Bow city Campground. Good opportunities present for big and small boats and walk/wade in.

WILSON - Last Updated: 2/20/2008
Waterfowl numbers 600 ducks,1200 Canada Geese
Water level about 3 feet low but up 4 feet from 2006
Hunting conditions open water from Horseshoe Bend area to dam
Expected hunting success currently no Snow Geese
Comments Duck Season and Dark Goose Season Closed
