Indiana Pro Takes Lead
in WBFA World Championship on Coosa River
Gadsden, Alabama, November 10, 2000 - Sylvia
Graham of Valparaiso, Indiana boated a limit of 5 bass to take
the first day lead in the 2000 Women's Bass Fishing Association
(WBFA) Classic World Championship.
Twenty-six of the world's top professional anglers are competing
for the title of World Champion by bass fishing the Coosa River
in Lake Neely Henry. They are members of WBFA who have amassed
the highest number of points on the WBFA 2000 Tour.
Graham summed up the day's fishing on Lake Neely Henry with
one word, "challenging." Along with the other anglers,
the Indiana pro battled rain under a tornado watch early in the
day and muddy water followed by high winds as a strong front
moved across the Coosa River. Despite the weather, she landed
the big fish of the day, a 4.03 pound spotted bass, which boosted
her total catch to 9.65 pounds.
Mary DiVincenti of Clinton Louisiana finished with 5 fish
that weighed 7.92 pounds, which landed her in second place for
this opening day of the championship tournament. "It was
a hard day," said DiVincenti. "I had a good practice,
but today I only got 6 bites and the fish were scattered."
Finishing third was Bernice Wilkes of Moultrie, Georgia who
weighed in 5 keeper bass that weighed 7.78 pounds. "I had
to change my tactics from practice," said the Georgia pro."Rain
water was gushing mud into the lake all over."
Remaining competition days are Friday and Saturday, November
11 and 12. Weigh-in each day is at 2:30 p.m. at Gadsden City
Park Launch and Marina. Famed bass fishing industry entrepreneur

Special Needs Kids Fish
With Professional Anglers
Gadsden, Alabama, November 5, 2000 - Youngsters with
disabilities gathered at Gadsden City Park boat launch and marina
today and were treated to fishing trips with a favorite professional
angler of the Women's Bass Fishing Association (WBFA). Twenty-six
of the top women anglers in the world assembled in Gadsden Saturday
in preparation for the WBFA Tour's 2000 Classic World Championship.
C.A.S.T. for Kids, an organization that began in the state
of Washington to provide disabled and disadvantaged children
opportunities to enjoy fishing and is enjoying its seventh year
of success, managed the event. C.A.S.T. for Kids sponsored the
Gadsden program in cooperation with WBFA and Gadsden Parks, as
well as numerous local and national sponsors and contributors.
Some 21 lady pros used their own bass boats to take one or
more children out into the waters of Lake Neely Henry
for a morning of fishing fun. Many of the children had never
been in a boat or been fishing. Almost all caught fish and most
brought in several fish that included bass, bluegills and catfish.
Hooks lines and bobbers were used by some and those who preferred
used artificial lures furnished by the pros.
Organizations such as State BASS Federations, Bureau of Reclamation,
Department of Interior, National Park Service, Job Corps Centers,
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, state departments of fish and
game, product sponsors - and now WBFA - have all joined forces
with expert anglers and volunteers to provide fishing opportunities
for kids. The children come from places like Shriner's Hospitals,
Children's Hospitals, Make-A-Wish Foundations, Ronald McDonald
Houses and City Parks and Recreation Special Populations Groups.
The faces of the youngsters gathered at Gadsden showed excitement
from the start. Brave kids with widely varying disabilities crawled
or were lifted into gleaming bass boats and fished with professionals
with colorful attire and sponsor patches. The WBFA pros signed
autographs for the children and escorted their guest anglers
to the stage for photographs and presentation of a plaque with
a photo of themselves and their host, called "captains"
by the C.A.S.T. organization.
Each child was given the microphone and a chance to address
the crowd gathered at the WBFA weigh-in site. Stories of good
times, landed or lost fish and funny experiences on the water
entertained onlookers. Each lady pro thanked the C.A.S.T. and
WBFA officials for allowing them to participate in and enjoy
the experience.
The day was made as complete as possible for the children by
hot dogs cooked on site and gifts to take home. Each child received
a tackle box, rigged rod and reel and a T-shirt commemorating
the day, as well as their plaque, photograph and autographed
copies of a WBFA Outdoors magazine.
The 26 anglers are in Gadsden to participate in the WBFA
Classic World Championship. The group represents the best
of the very large nationwide organization, and they will practice
fish on Neely Henry Lake beginning Monday and fish in competition
beginning Thursday, concluding with a public weigh-in on Saturday,
November 12. The famed Ray Scott will serve as weighmaster for
determining the new World Champion lady angler.
