Tim Horton Blows Away The Field By Nearly 16 Pounds
For The BIG Kmart Top 150 Victory
David Fritts surges to second with Kevin VanDam settling for second just four ounces back

Charles County, Md. Oct. 16, 1999 -- Tim Horton, a 27-year-old pro from
Spruce Pine, Alabama kept it all together until he finally reached the
Smallwood State Park weigh-in stand Saturday at the $409,450 BIG Kmart
BASSMASTER Top 150 on Maryland's Potomac River. It was only after the
scales showed that his 19-pound, 13-ounce limit for a four-day total of
77-8 assured his victory did Horton let his emotions overwhelm him.

Choking back tears, Horton told B.A.S.S. emcee Fish Fishburne that his
thoughts had drifted during the day to an 18-year-old disabled youth named
Jason who he had taken fishing during a charity event at Alabama's Pickwick
Lake.

"Just thinking about his situation in life as compared to mine - and that
this was just a fishing tournament - put everything into perspective. If
things didn't work out today, it just wasn't that big of a deal in
comparison."

Well, everything worked out quite nicely for Horton in taking home the
$74,000 in cash and a fully-rigged Ranger boat and Mercury outboard valued
at $26,000. Not only did respond with a stunning effort, he won going away
by extending his lead to nearly 16 pounds.

"I was hoping that within five years I could win one, this is pretty much a
surprise," said Horton about his first year on the BIG Kmart Top 150
circuit. " I'm on a roll now but it can go the other way pretty quick."

Horton's Potomac magic came largely on the strength of a 1/2-ounce
Excalibur Cordell Spot (fire tiger) fished on 14-pound Silver Thread line
and rigged to a seven-foot Browning crankin' stick/Shimano Curado
combination. Unlike many other pros who found themselves fishing familiar
water, Horton discovered an overlooked rocky shoal that he found on the
last day of practice. Tipped off by a significantly larger group of feeding
cormorants and gulls than normally seen on the Potomac, Horton was drawn to
the area, eventually finding the 20 by 75-yard spot by idling around the
bay with sonar.

Leading by nearly 8 1/2 pounds going into the final round (when the field
is pared down to the top ten pros), Horton virtually had everyone else
fighting for second place. Although the 1993 BASS Masters Classic champion,
David Fritts of Lexington, North Carolina was among that group in seventh
place, this wizard of the crankbait didn't look to figure in the final
flurry. But, with a 16-pound, five ounce limit - on a day when most of the
other leaders couldn't break the 14-pound mark - Fritts finished with 61-10
for second place.

Although the majority of his largemouth bass came on a 3/8-ounce Blue Fox
jig (black/blue) with an emerald blue Zoom Swimming Chunk, a key to his
success was his ability to crank up some big smallmouth off a gravel bar
using a No. 7 Rapala Risto Rap (Hot Mustard).

Settling for third place was the 1999 B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year, Kevin
VanDam's jig pattern left him just four ounces behind Fritts with a
four-day tally of 61-6 aided by a final-day limit of 12-4.

Working a 1/2-ounce Denny Brauer Strike King jig (chameleon craw and Texas
craw patterns) along a channel drop just north of I-95, the Kalamazoo,
Michigan pro felt he had to go looking for bigger fish and abandoned his
primary water in search of better quality bass. Admitting that he probably
made a mistake (rare for VanDam under final-round tournament conditions),
he responded that "when I make a mistake like that, the key is to learn
from it and next time not repeat it."

The BASSMASTER Tournament Trail is the oldest and most prestigious fishing
circuit in America. It has set the standard for excellence, credibility,

Horton Extends His Lead With Another 20-Pound Limit
Top ten anglers lock horns in Saturday's final round
but nine of them may be fishing for second place
Charles County, Md. Oct. 15, 1999 -- If Tim Horton would have faltered
during the third round of the $409,450 BIG Kmart BASSMASTER Top 150,
everyone would have understood. With the likes of Kevin VanDam, Jay Yelas
and Skeet Reese in close pursuit, the pressure was indeed on the
27-year-old Alabama angler fishing his first season on the BIG Kmart Top
150 circuit and his first event ever on the Potomac River.

Not only did Horton avoid a drop from first place, he responded in
spectacular fashion to extend his lead with a third-round limit of 20
pounds, 12 ounces for a three-day total of 57-11. This 20-pound class limit
was Horton's second of the tournament and proved to his competitors that
the young pro from Spruce Pine, Alabama was for real.

So real that even the superstar in second place, Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo,
Michigan, had to admit that only a small miracle during Saturday's final
round would shake Horton from first place.

"We may all be fishing for second place," said VanDam after weighing in a
superb 18-pound, 11-ounce limit bringing him to 49-2 for three days, but
still over 81/2 pounds behind the hard-charging Horton.

Even though VanDam is one of the best closers in the business, a lead of
this magnitude demands not only a superhuman effort from him, but some
decidedly bad luck for Horton. While no one is counting any of the leaders
out, Horton seems to be getting nothing but stronger. In fact, he mentioned
that when he found his area on the last day of practice, it was so good
that "for the first time in my fishing career, I couldn't sleep the night
before the tournament began."

After falling back from third to sixth place on day two, Jay Yelas of
Tyler, Texas regained the third spot by once again staking out his
"community hole" at Fox Ferry near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge outside of
Washington, D.C. where he bagged an 18-7 limit for a three-day total of
48-2 .

Having fished this one well-known area since 1992, Yelas thanked his fellow
competitors for letting him have the spot all to himself.

"There is no way I could catch those fish without the courtesy of the other
fishermen," noted Yelas. "And, all the time I've been fishing here, it's
never been better than today."

The third-day surge from Yelas forced California's Skeet Reese to take one
step back to fourth place despite a respectable 15-13 limit that kept him
in the hunt at 47-10

"I can catch some fish early, but I need that good outgoing tide in the
afternoon. Unfortunately, I'm probably not going to get to fish that tide
much tomorrow. My whole day tomorrow will be based on the first three hours
of the day," sighed Reese about tidal conditions which aren't quite playing
into his hand.

"There is very limited prime fishing water here, so it's very hard to run
and gun. The guys who have been fishing here for the last ten days have a
lot more to fish than I do. I really don't have that much to run and gun
to."

As the top ten pros ready themselves for the final round of fishing
tomorrow (to be paired with press observers), their amateur partners wound
up their competition today as Bernie Springer of Burke, Virginia, a
49-year-old computer systems analyst who was fishing in his second BIG
Kmart Top 150 event took home the top prize of a fully rigged Ranger boat
with a three-day total of 30 pounds, nine ounces.

"It's unbelievable at this point. It's hard to fully realize what has
happen," laughed Springer after catching a 7-1 final round limit that was
his smallest of the tournament. "I really didn't think I could win it with
the fish I got today."

Alabama's Tim Horton Bucks Strong Winds To Move From Second To First At The Big Kmart Potomac Top 150
David Fritts takes over second as California's Skeet Reese vaults to third
Charles County, Md. Oct. 14, 1999 -- Despite 25 mile-per-hour
northeasterly winds that whipped the Potomac River into a froth,
27-year-old Tim Horton of Spruce Pine, Alabama is still living large after
two days of the $409,450 BIG Kmart BASSMASTER Top 150 with a 15-pound,
three-ounce limit that pushed him from second to first with a total of
36-15.

"The wind kept the tide from coming in and the main thing is it kept the
water dirty. I had three to four feet on my rockpile, but today I only had
one to two feet. It really got thick with silt in there and hurt my
confidence," commented Horton after a day that forced many anglers to
scramble to new areas.

"The wind this morning made it real hard to stay on the fish. I would throw
my bait and it would just blow away."

The wind also blew away the first-day leader, Kevin Wirth of Crestwood,
Kentucky who struggled just to catch three bass for six pounds, one ounce
to add to his stunning first-round limit of 22 pounds for a 28-1 two-day
total.

Although Wirth's plunge to eighth place will make it tougher for him to
stay among the leaders when the field is cut to just ten professionals for
the final round on Saturday, it did open up things for others like the 1993
BASS Masters Classic Champion, David Fritts of Lexington, North Carolina.

For someone who has carved a formidable career out of bucking open water,
the gusty conditions seemed to play into Fritts' hand by producing the
largest limit of the second-round, an 18 pound, one ounce effort that
vaulted him from 14th place to second. Although his 32-1 total leaves him
nearly five pounds behind Horton, it is still anyone's tournament to win on
the Potomac.

For Californian, Skeet Reese, the Potomac was a welcome tonic on day two,
one that delivered a 17 pound, 14 ounce limit, a 31-13 total and brighter
picture of returning to the BASS Masters Classic. After winning the
inaugural western division title two years ago, the engaging West Coast
angler suffered through a tough sophmore season.

Like all the other professional anglers competing in the BIG Kmart Top 150
events - and aside from the first-place $100,000 payday for these events -
acquiring points enough for one of the coveted 25 invitations to the Super
Bowl of bass fishing (coming July 2000 in Chicago) is paramount for Reese.

But, there is still much fishing to be done here, especially when the guy
just behind Reese in fourth place is none other than the 1999 B.A.S.S.
Angler-of-the-Year, Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Following a solid,
if unspectacular first round that placed VanDam in 21st place with 12
pounds, 14 ounces, the superstar pro responded as expected with a strong
17-9 limit for a two-day, 30-7 creel. Coming off a wire-to-wire eastern
invitational victory just one month ago on the St. Lawrence River near
Clayton, New York, VanDam is undoubtedly the hottest angler on the pro
circuit.

Making this Potomac River tournament truly an international affair is
Tokyo's Norio Tanabe, a veteran B.A.S.S. competitor who got off to a solid
start yesterday with a 15-5 bag for fifth place and was a model of
consistency during the second round with 14 pounds, 11 ounces, moving him
ne notch up the leader board to fifth place.

Kevin Wirth Breaks Out Strong At Big Kmart Top 150
Results vary for anglers as forecasts of strong winds may shuffle standings again tomorrow
Charles County, Md. Oct. 13, 1999 -- Kentucky's Kevin Wirth knows the
value of a strong start, especially when his competition is the
star-studded best in professional bass fishing at the $409,450 BIG Kmart
BASSMASTER Top 150 on Maryland's Potomac River Oct. 13-16.

With a 22-pound, five-bass limit capped off by a six-pound big fish, Wirth
stepped out quickly by fishing his key areas just long enough to get a
solid limit and then moving on. In fact, his big bass came as the result of
pulling off his primary water to go look for areas that could produce a
limit for his amateur partner.

"In practice, I stopped on this area and never got a bite. But, today it
looked perfect. I made about three casts, caught my big fish, culled
another and then got six more 2 1/2-pounders I couldn't use. I really
didn't want to hurt what I had, so I came in early."

"I'm not fishing for a lot of bites, but the ones I'm getting are quality.
Now, it just depends what the wind does tomorrow. Today, the wind starting
messing things up. If it's a northwest wind, it probably won't bother me
much. But, if we get a southeast wind like today, it dirties up the water.
And, when the water gets dirty like that, I don't care how many fish are
there, it will be tough to catch them."

As a former jockey who rode in the 1981 Kentucky Derby and a 1998 BASS
Masters Classic qualifier, Wirth is no stranger to intense competition. And
from the looks of things, he'll need all that experience with the likes of
Alabama's Tim Horton breathing down his neck in second place at 21 pounds,
12 ounces. Horton, a 27-year-old fisherman from Spruce Pine (and a guide
on Pickwick Lake) is fishing his first full year on the BIG Kmart Top 150
circuit.

Following Horton in second place, the drop-off in weights happens quickly
with a near five-pound plunge to third place, a position held by veteran
pro, Jay Yelas of Tyler, Texas at 16, pounds, 14 ounces.

Of course, the big question is whether Wirth or Horton can possibly
duplicate limits which are rather substantial for the Potomac. Or, if they
can stay consistent in an event where many anglers feel that water levels
and conditions are hard to figure.

"The river system is down real low since they haven't had any rain all
summer long. When you have a tide fluctuation and an unusually low river
system, it makes it totally different," noted Larry Nixon, B.A.S.S.' first
millionaire (based on tournament winnings) and the recent winner of a BIG
Kmart Top 150 event on Detroit's Lake St. Claire, Aug. 22-28.

"I'm catching my fish on different tides than ever before. It took me a
couple days to figure that out. The fish were there, they're just spookier,
harder to catch and weren't set up on their usual ambush points. When the
tide gets low now, they're absolutely gone. You can't do anything with
them."

Also, as professional bass fishermen become more schooled in a waters as
familiar as the Potomac, finding productive water - and not having to
share it with anyone else - has become a real issue here. Just last year
when bass fishing superstar, Denny Brauer of Camdenton, Missouri won this
event with 58-11 (Aug. 26-29, 1998), he found an off-beat creek that
everyone else had ignored. Based on comments from several pros after the
first round, the odds of someone finding solitude on the Potomac this week
are "slim and none."
