Correia makes move from fifth place
to take win at Lake Martin

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. - March 9, 2002 - Danny Correia entered Saturday's final round of competition in the Alabama CITGO BASSMASTER Eastern Open presented by Skeeter Boats in fifth place. By the end of the day the Marlboro, Mass. angler had brought in 12 pounds 1 ounce of bass and claimed his first career victory.

Correia, who has been a professional angler for 14 years, had a three-day total of 29-15, which gave him a 2-7 margin of victory en route to claiming the $51,000 first prize.

"I'm pumped up," said an excited Correia who placed second at the 1986 BASS Masters Classic where he competed as an amateur representing the B.A.S.S. Federation. "I had a great day, getting my limit by 10 o'clock this morning. It was an excellent week and an excellent practice. This is great."

Correia gave credit for the victory to using a Luck-E-Strike Razor Worm (6-inch, green pumpkin) on 8-pound Berkley Vanish line and to fellow competitor Gerald Beck.

"I owe a lot to Gerald Beck," explained Correia. "He told me what to look for during practice and I actually ended up finding two of his spots. Those two spots were where I had my success. Without his help in keying me in to look for the deep vertical drops, I wouldn't have caught what I did."

Finishing in a tie for second and claiming $36,000 each were Danny White of Milledgeville, Ga. and McCalla, Ala.'s Kyle Mabrey with 27-8. Tom Dolin of Palatine Bridge, N. Y. brought in 27-7 to claim $17,500 for fourth and Richard Liegeber of Cullman, Ala. finished fifth with 26-12, claiming $12,000.

Mabrey found success skipping docks with a Strike King tube and by focusing on brush in the backs of pockets. White caught his fish on two custom made baits a spinnerbait and a jig, working bank areas.

Day one and two leader Nick Gainey fell to sixth spot after he was unable to get a single bite in the final round.

"I'm glad that it happened the way it did (not getting a bite) rather than missing one," said Gainey. "I had a lot of fun."

Leigeber made the day's big jump moving from 24th place largely on the strength of a 7-11 spotted bass, which also claimed him the day's $1,000 big bass bonus.

The Alabama CITGO BASSMASTER Eastern Open presented by Skeeter will be televised on ESPN2 Saturday, March 30 at 10:30 a.m. (ET)

At stake in this, the second tournament of the three-event CITGO BASSMASTER Eastern Open circuit, was a total purse of $250,000 and valuable points toward qualifying for the prestigious 2002 CITGO BASS Masters Classic to be held July 25-27 in Birmingham, Ala.

Daily weigh-ins took place at Wind Creek State Park Marina.

Gainey Lets It Ride On Martin
South Carolina pro maintains hold on first place

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. - March 8, 2002 - Nick Gainey's gamble in the first round of the Alabama CITGO BASSMASTER Eastern Open presented by Skeeter Boats paid off by landing him in first place. On Friday the South Carolina pro let it ride and maintained his hold on first place with a two-day total of 26 pounds 10 ounces of Lake Martin bass.

"Tomorrow I don't have anything to lose," said Gainey, whose best finish in a B.A.S.S. event is a tenth place approximately a decade ago. "I'm going to my one spot and I'm going to throw my bait until the cows come home. If I catch fish great, if not I'll still be happy."

On a day that saw massive change on the leader board, Gainey stretched his lead to 3-12 over second place Kyle Mabry. Mabry of McCalla, Ala. moved into second from eighth place thanks to a 13-9 limit giving him a 22-14 total. New York pro Aaron Wessels fell to third with a two-day total of 20-11 while fellow New Yorker Tom Dolin moved into fourth with 19-7. Danny Corriea of Marlboro, Mass. is fifth with 17-14.

Entering the final round Gainey isn't sure whether his one spot can still produce any fish, but only caught three out of the location today. At 10:30 he agreed to go to his partner's location and was only able to get two more bites the remainder of the afternoon-including his last fish of the day on his final cast.

"I thought the rise in water temperature might make the bite a little better," he explained. "I don't know if there are more fish in the area or not, but I don't have a back-up area. My plan coming in was to try and catch two or three largemouths that weighed 2 to 3 pounds each day, so I'm going to stick to it."

Wessels attributed his drop to "fishing like a rookie".

"The (ESPN2) cameramen really got a show today from my partner and I," said Wessels. "I lost seven fish and he lost six. The good thing is that with the front predicted to move in tonight I really think the fish will load up in the area I'm fishing. Despite the rise in temperature the fish stayed about the same depth as yesterday."

Overall the field performed almost identically to Thursday with the same number of limits, 61, and a total of only 2 and 1/2 pounds less being weighed in. Out of the field of 314, there were 46 anglers unable to bring in a single bass.

Florida's Tommy Fears caught the day's big bass, a 6-1 largemouth that earned him $1,000.

Saturday's final weigh-in will have a special guest as Alabama Governor Don Siegleman is scheduled to attend.

South Carolina's Nick Gainey
in Command on Lake Martin
Gamble to go after largemouths pays off

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. - March 7, 2002 - Entering the first day of competition in the Alabama CITGO BASSMASTER Eastern Open presented by Skeeter Boats, South Carolina's Nick Gainey decided to gamble. Gainey's decision to only go after Lake Martin's largemouth bass population paid off as he brought in 14 and 1/2 pounds to take the early lead in the three-day, $250,000 event.

"I knew coming into this that one largemouth could weigh more than three or four of the spotted bass," said Gainey referring to the lake's spotted bass, which are smaller than the largemouth, but more plentiful. "I made the decision to live and die on the largemouths and the Good Lord shined on me today, I had five bites and I caught all five fish."

Gainey's total gives him a 2 pound 1 ounce lead over second place Aaron Wessels of New York who brought in 12-7. Maryland's Chris Price caught 12-4 for third, Chris Duke of Tennessee brought in 10-15 for fourth and Georgia angler Joe Crosby's 10-4 was good enough for fifth.

After several days of cool weather, the area is experiencing a warming trend -some fisherman reported water temperatures jumping as much as 6 degrees today -which could have a huge impact on the outcome of the tournament. Many anglers, though, were not as concerned with the warmer water as they were with the wind.

Wessels, whose limit was made up entirely of spotted bass, is concerned only with wind direction.

"The direction of the wind is important to me because of the area I'm fishing," explained Wessels. "When it blows the wrong direction it affects the current and slows down the bite. I think, though, that I'll be able to duplicate my performance tomorrow."

Anglers overall had a tough day on the central Alabama impoundment as only 61 limits were brought in by the field. Additionally, 43 anglers recorded zeroes on the day.

In addition to having the lead, Gainey also earned the day's $1,000 big bass bonus for a 5-13 largemouth.
