Vander Kooi Claims Victory on Lake Mead
Arizona pro follows up Friday's amazing effort for first career win

LAS VEGAS, Nev., March 16, 2002 - On Friday, Rob Vander Kooi jumped from 57th to third at the Nevada CITGO BASSMASTER Western Open presented by Mercury Marine on the strength of a 17-pound 6-ounce limit. The Arizona pro proved Saturday that his effort was no fluke as he weighed in 10-1 and vaulted to his first career B.A.S.S. victory and earned the $35,000 top prize.

"It's been a lifelong dream to win one of these," said Vander Kooi, whose 29-14, three -day catch put him ahead of second-place finisher Brent Ehrler. "I ran as far as I could up the Virgin River and caught everything in real shallow water. It was extremely exciting and a lot of fun. I got nervous and was worried about the wind, so I came back around 12:30 and spent the rest of the day fishing (near the weigh-in) in the Callville Bay area."

Ehrler finished only five ounces behind Vander Kooi with 29-9, while Skeet Reese, the previous day's leader, fell to third with 28-0. Brett Hite finished fourth with 23-9 and Aaron Martens' 22-15 was good enough for fifth.

"I found this spot last season when BASS was here on Lake Mead," explained Vander Kooi, whose best previous finish in a B.A.S.S. event was second in 1998 at Lake Shasta. "With the exception of one that I caught on a spinnerbait, all of my fish came while flipping a Zipper Junior Worm rigged with a 1/4- ounce Tungsten weight. The wind gave me some problems today because it made me work faster than I wanted to."

Ehrler relied primarily on a drop-shot rig using a 4-inch Bait Breath Prisoner worm and an oxblood-colored Roboworm.

"I fished in one area, keying on small ledges and dark, shallow water in the backs of coves," said Ehrler. "Once I discovered the pattern, I bounced around, fishing blindly and caught fish in other areas. It was a typical pre-spawn pattern here with the fish anywhere from 5-15 feet deep. Today I had my limit early, and caught my last fish at around 9 a.m. I went looking for bigger fish but they never materialized."

Ron Berg brought in a 5-1 largemouth to claim the day's $650 big bass bonus.

At stake at this event, the third of the four-event Western Open circuit, was a $35,000 top prize and valuable points toward qualifying for the prestigious 2002 CITGO BASS Masters Classic.

Reese Takes Early Lead On Mead
Cold weather keeps catch down; only five limits caught

LAS VEGAS, Nev., March 14, 2002 - Despite unusually tough fishing conditions on Lake Mead, California's Skeet Reese was able to bring in 12 pounds, 5 ounces Thursday to take the first-round lead of the Nevada CITGO BASSMASTER Western Open presented by Mercury Marine.

Lake Mead anglers were plagued by low water conditions, a north wind and cool temperatures that kept fish out of the pre-spawn shallow areas.

"I'm not sure what will happen tomorrow," Reese explained. "There is a definite pattern here, but I'm not sure if there are more fish in the area I'm fishing or if more will move up. I'm just going to go out fishing."

In second place, just 13 ounces behind Reese, is fellow Californian Mark Tyler with 111/2 pounds. Brent Erhler is third with 11-5, followed by Jack Sykes with 10-5 and Clint Johanson's 9-13.

"It was tough today," said Tyler. "I only caught six fish, but I missed three opportunities and only had one in the boat at 11 this morning. I think I can do a little better tomorrow because I figured the pattern out."

The forecast heading into Thursday had called for winds of up to 40 MPH in the Las Vegas area, which would have made fishing impossible on Lake Mead. Those winds never materialized, however and conditions allowed for nearly perfect weather.

"There was almost no wind," remarked Tyler. "I had been prepared for war to get my location, but it turned out to be perfect with just enough of a breeze to ripple the water. Other than that, the wind was not a factor."

The field of 136 anglers brought in 199 fish and only five limits. Las Vegas angler Randy Black captured the $650 big bass award with his 4-10 catch.

At stake at this event, the third of the four-event Western Open circuit, is a $35,000 top prize and valuable points toward qualifying for the prestigious 2002 CITGO BASS Masters Classic.

The Arizona CITGO BASSMASTER Western Open presented by Mercury Marine will be televised on ESPN2 Saturday, April 6 at 10:30 a.m. (ET) and will be re-aired on Friday, April 12 at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. (ET).

WESTERN OPEN TAKES ON LAKE MEAD
CITGO BASSMASTERS Tackle Famed Western Reservoir

LAS VEGAS, Nev., March 6, 2002-Lake Mead, a sprawling 163,000-acre impoundment located in the desert south of Las Vegas, has long been considered one of the bass jewels of the West. But when the best Western pros tackle the famed reservoir March 14-16 for
the Arizona CITGO BASSMASTER Western Open presented by Mercury Marine, they will find Lake Mead at its challenging best.

Still, in 33 years of tournaments, the CITGO BASSMASTER pros have always found a way to catch bass under even the worst possible circumstances.

To John Murray's way of thinking, that aptly describes Lake Mead during this time of year. One of the West's top tournament warriors, the Arizona pro knows Mead as intimately as most of us know our backyards. And a week before the event, he expects the
tournament to provide a rigorous three-day test.

"It's going to be very tough," Murray said. "With the low water we have on Mead right now - the lake is 35 to 40 feet low - we just don't have the cover to fish that we've had for the last four or five years. And that will make the bass relate to cover
a lot differently.

"That lake really needs cover. Without a lot of brush in the water, there's going to be a lot of suspended fish and a lot of deeper, rock-related fish. And that's going to make them harder to find and harder to catch."

As if the low-water level doesn't present enough problems for the competitors, Murray emphasizes that the desert region has yet to begin warming up from the winter. And, he says it is almost impossible to catch bass consistently when Mead's deep,
clear waters are still cold.

"Because of the conditions, the areas will fish small and the catch rate will be down quite a bit," Murray added. "Guys will have to cover a lot of water just to catch one fish here and one fish there."

Without a sudden warming trend in the coming week, Murray predicts that the winning weight will be 30 to 38 pounds (last year's winner, Jack Gadlage, weighed in 43 pounds, 12 ounces). But he is actually looking forward to the upcoming challenge.

"After fishing this lake for 20 years, a lot of the old areas that we fished back in the late 80s will be a factor," Murray said. "I'm hoping that the experience factor will work in my favor."

At stake in this, the third tournament of the four-event Western Open circuit, are a $48,000 top prize and valuable points toward qualifying for the prestigious 2002 CITGO BASS Masters Classic.

Daily weigh-ins take place at Callville Bay Marina at 2:30 p.m. Anglers launch beginning at 5:45 a.m.
