NIXON ENDS SEVEN-YEAR DROUGHT
Arkansas pro edges Martin in BASS Event
MT. CLEMENS, Mich., Aug. 28, 1999 - In a fitting conclusion
to a week-long
battle between a pair of legendary tournament warriors, Arkansas
pro Larry
Nixon brought in five smallmouth weighing 16 pounds, 13 ounces
Saturday to
edge longtime rival Roland Martin by a mere 12 ounces and claim
the
$100,000 top prize in the $409,450 BIG Kmart BASSMASTER Top 150
on
Michigan's Lake St. Clair.
Nixon, 48, broke a seven-year BASSMASTER tournament drought
with a four-day
total of 73 pounds, 9 ounces. His heroics robbed Martin of the
chance to
win a record 20th B.A.S.S. event.
"Wow. I don't know what to think, it's been so long since
I was in this
position," said Nixon, who scored his 14th B.A.S.S. win.
"This has been a
long time coming - too long. I was beginning to wonder if I was
ever going
to win one of these things again. I can't tell you how good this
feels.
"It's been a great week. I really enjoyed battling with
Roland again, who
is one of my best friends on the tour. It was like old times
again."
The action started slowly for Nixon on Saturday, who spent
the entire week
fishing a 20-yard stretch of lake habitat. Around noon, Nixon
switched from
a spider grub to a Carolina-rigged Berkley Power Lizard and began
adding
important weight to his catch.
For the second day in the four-day tournament, Nixon took
big-bass honors
Saturday with a 4-10 smallmouth
Martin, the 59-year-old nine-time B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year,
out-scored
Nixon Saturday with a limit weighing 17-2, but fell short with
his overall
total of 72-13. He took home $38,000 for second place.
"It's disappointing to come this close and not win,"
Martin said. "But it's
been a good week, and the fishing was great. I caught four bass
that
weighed over 5 pounds - now that's tremendous fishing."
Martin's success came on a Blue Fox spinnerbait and tubejig
fished along a
submerged ledge.
Arkansas' Rob Kilby finished third with 70-11, thanks to a
17-2 catch in
Saturday's top-10 finals shoot-out. Like most of the top finishers,
he
scored well on a tubejig.
A third Arkansas angler, Stephen Browning, turned in Saturday's
largest
catch - 18-1 - to place fourth with 68-9. Local favorite Kim
Stricker of
Howell finished fifth with 67-7.
At stake is the $100,000 top prize in the season-opening event
of the $6
million BASSMASTER Tournament Trail, the nation's oldest and
most
prestigious fishing circuit. After three days of competition,
the field has
been paired down to the top-10 for Saturday's lucrative final
round.
The 31-year-old BASSMASTER Tournament Trail is the oldest
and most
prestigious bass fishing tournament circuit in the country. It
has set the
standard for credibility, professionalism and sportsmanship for
more than
three decades.

OF LEGENDARY BASSMASTER PROS
Larry Nixon Overtakes Martin Entering Finals
MT. CLEMENS, Mich., Aug. 27, 1999 - In a battle pitting
two of professional
fishing's most celebrated anglers, Arkansas pro 48-year-old Larry
Nixon
edged past 59-year-old Florida legend Roland Martin Friday to
take the lead
entering the final round of the $409,450 BIG Kmart BASSMASTER
Top 150 on
Michigan's Lake St. Clair.
At stake is the $100,000 top prize in the season-opening event
of the $6
million BASSMASTER Tournament Trail, the nation's oldest and
most
prestigious fishing circuit. After three days of competition,
the field has
been paired down to the top-10 for Saturday's lucrative final
round.
Nixon, a former BASS Masters Classic champion, brought in
a five-bass limit
weighing 17 pounds, 12 ounces Friday to extend his three-day
total to 56
pounds, 12 ounces. That moved him up from second place and gave
him a
1-pound, 11-ounce lead over Martin (55-11). The Florida pro weighed
in his
smallest limit of the week - 14-15 - on Friday.
"This is quite a lake," Nixon said. "In a lake
this big, I've caught all of
my fish in one little place that might be 20 yards around. But
it's a real
special spot.
"Today was a little bit tougher, because I lost a 4-pounder
that would have
really helped me. And I had a pair of 3-pounders on my jerkbait
- and both
of them pulled off."
Nixon found his special spot two months ago during another
national
tournament on St. Clair. During that event, the area surrendered
enough
weight to secure fifth place.
Martin, a nine-time B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year, admitted
that his
confidence in his chances of winning a record 20th victory on
Saturday
wasn't strong. "Today was my hardest day yet; I really struggled,"
he said.
"I did have 10 bites today, but I had some bad luck and
broke off two big
smallmouths on the hook-set with 12-pound line and a tubebait."
Arkansas' Rob Kilby is third with 53-9, followed by Michigan's
Kim Stricker
(52-4) and Tim Horton of Alabama (51-1). Alabama's Gerald Swindle
and St.
Clair guide Art Ferguson are tied for six with 50-12, followed
by Arkansas'
Stephen Browning (50-8), Jeff Barnes of Alabama (50-7) and Florida's
Chet
Douthit (49-14).
Ohio's Dan Mullens won the amateur division of the event,
which concluded
Friday. Mullens, a supervisor in a uranium-processing plant,
caught 14 bass
weighing 42-3 to win a fully rigged Ranger/Mercury package valued
at
$25,000.
The tournament concludes on Saturday when the top-10 pros
face off in a
one-day competition. The weigh-in begins at 3 p.m.
The pros and amateurs alike enjoyed an outstanding week of
fishing on one
of the finest smallmouth fisheries in the country. It took 42-2
to get the
final, 40th-place check.
On Saturday, area youngsters will compete in the popular BASSMASTER
CastingKids free contest, which will be held at the Metro Beach
Metropark
weigh-in site from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This national program
was
designed by B.A.S.S. CEO Helen Sevier to encourage children to
learn the
basics of casting, flipping and pitching.

MT. CLEMENS, Mich, Aug. 26, 1999 Two of bass fishing's
most storied pros
ruled the smallmouth bass world of Lake St. Clair again on Thursday,
controlling the second round of the $409,450 BIG Kmart BASSMASTER
Top 150
tournament.
Roland Martin of Florida and Arkansas' Larry Nixon again brought
impressive
five-bass limits of smallmouth to the scales Thursday to maintain
their
open-round positioning. Martin's catch weighed 17 pounds, 14
ounces, and
gave him a two-day total of 40-12. Nixon is close behind at 39-0
after his
catch weighing 18-13
Martin, 59, moved a step closer to winning a record 20th B.A.S.S.
tournament and the $100,000 top prize that comes with it. He
also owns a
record nine B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year titles.
"It was a difficult day because the same things that
worked (Wednesday)
just didn't work today," said Martin, whose last three BASSMASTER
wins
occurred on renowned smallmouth waters. "My best spots didn't
produce
anything today - and I fished them three different times today.
In fact,
the same lure didn't even work today and I had to switch to something
else.
"But this is a great lake, a terrific place to catch
smallmouths. It's just
full of big smallmouths like these."
Martin's catch included a 5-pound-plus trophy smallie.
Although he brought in one of the day's best limits, Nixon
also claimed he
had a difficult time re-locating his bass from Wednesday. "I
struggled for
a while and then I started putting something together today,"
the former
BASS Masters Classic and Angler of the Year winner. "It
was just real hard
to find them today."
Alabama's Jeff Barnes held onto third place with 38-8, followed
by St.
Clair guide Art Ferguson (35-12) and Michigan's Kim Stricker
(35-2).
North Carolina's Dustin Wilks took Thursday's big-bass honors
with a
6-pound, 1-ounce smallmouth.
The tournament continues with its full field Friday before
narrowing down
the participants to the top 10. The 10 survivors will keep their
total
weight as they compete in a final championship round.
On Saturday, area youngsters will compete in the popular BASSMASTER
CastingKids free contest, which will be held at the Metro Beach
Metropark
weigh-in site from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This national program
was
designed by B.A.S.S. CEO Helen Sevier to encourage children to
learn the
basics of casting, flipping and pitching.

Roland Martin Seeks 20th Win on Lake St.
Clair
MT. CLEMENS, Mich., Aug. 25, 1999 - For an angler who
lives in the famous
largemouth-bass world of Florida's Lake Okeechobee, Roland Martin
has
become quite a smallmouth aficionado. The legendary pro's last
three
B.A.S.S. victories have come on northern smallmouth venues.
And when the fishing fury that became the first round of the
$409,450 BIG
Kmart BASSMASTER Top 150 Wednesday on Michigan's Lake St. Clair
concluded, Martin had put himself in prime position to win a
record 20th national
tournament . His opening-day, five-bass catch weighed 22 pounds,
14 ounces
- all smallmouths. Included in his magnificent catch were smallies
weighing
5 pounds, 11 ounces, and 5-6.
That wiped out the 20-pound, 3-ounce limit weighed in earlier
by veteran
Arkansas pro Larry Nixon and held off a slew of fishermen with
catches in
the 16- to 19-pound range.
Martin, 59, owns B.A.S.S. records for victories (19) and Angler
of the Year
awards (nine). His last three tournament wins have come on prime
northern
smallmouth waters Lake Champlain, Hudson River and the Connecticut
River.
"I didn't lose any fish, which is the key to catching
a big stringer like
that on this lake," said Martin, who leads the hunt for
the $100,000 top
prize. "And this kind of rainy weather really helped me
a lot.
"I've got a good pattern going. It's something that I've
put together,
something that I've built that is a little different from everybody
else.
I'm using a lure that I have a tremendous amount of confidence
in. I've
caught nothing but big fish on it."
Martin, who refused to identify his most productive lure,
also caught three
muskies (including a 25-pounder).
Nixon, who caught the day's largest bass - a 5-14 smallmouth
- was equally
secretive about his highly successful strategy. "I've got
somebody on my
best spot whose trying to catch these same fish, but he can't
figure out
what I'm doing," he said. "I'm fortunate that I've
got two or three good
areas almost to myself."
Jeff Barnes, 39, of Alabama is third with 19-14, followed
by New Jersey's
19-3 and Jay Yelas of Texas 18-13.
"This lake is a lot of fun," Barnes said. "It's
a great place to fish, and
the bad weather really helped me out."
The tournament concludes on Saturday when the top-10 pros
face off in a
one-day competition. The daily weigh-ins begin at 3 p.m.
On Saturday, area youngsters will compete in the popular BASSMASTER
CastingKids free contest, which will be held at the Metro Beach
Metropark
weigh-in site from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This national program
was
designed by B.A.S.S. CEO Helen Sevier to encourage children to
learn the
basics of casting, flipping and pitching.
