Clunn finishes 2nd with gallant charge
Iaconelli wins his first Top 150
BURLINGTON, VT., Sept. 18, 1999 -- New Jersey angler Michael
Iaconelli
staved off remarkable charges by legendary pros Rick Clunn and
David Fritts
to win his first-ever BIG Kmart BASSMASTER Vermont Top 150 here
on Lake
Champlain.
Iaconelli's 17 pound, 7 ounce limit was his smallest catch
of the week, but
it was enough to turn back four-time BASS Masters Classic Champion
Rick
Clunn who finished second. Iaconelli's 61 pounds 3 ounces gave
him less
than a two-pound edge over Clunn of Ava, Mo. who had 59 pounds,
4 ounces
while Clunn's brother Randy Fite of Richards, Texas was third
with 57-8.
Iaconelli is on the fast track to stardom. In only his third
year as a pro,
he won the B.A.S.S. Federation National Championship last summer
and
finished sixth in the 1999 Classic held in New Orleans. The Vermont
victory
was worth $74,000 and a fully-rigged Ranger bass boat with a
Mercury
outboard valued at $26,000. After two events, he leads the Angler
of the
Year standings by four points over Michigan veteran Kim Stricker.
Clunn had the biggest sack of the day, a 22 pound, 2 ounce
catch consisting
of all largemouths he caught on a Luck "E" Strike tube
jig. He and Fite
shared the same fishing waters all three days.
David Fritts, who was 10th going into the last day, roared
into fourth
place with 55 pounds while Lake Fork Tackle Company owner Mark
Pack of
Mineola, Texas was fifth with 54 pounds, 15 ounces. Fritts had
Saturday's
second biggest limit that weighed 19 pounds, 4 ounces. All five
of his fish
were smallmouth.
Colder lake temperatures, brought on by a storm that raked
Lake Champlain
and forced cancellation of Friday's semifinal round, hurt Iaconelli's
largemouth bass pattern. During the first two days, he was catching
big
largemouth on a homemade jig and spinnerbait, but had to change
a Mann's
Ti-Classic spinnerbait and
Jelly Tube to catch smallmouth Saturday.
"My smallmouth pattern didn't work for me earlier in
the week, but I was
glad to get it going today," he said. "But I stayed
shallow -- probably
shallower than anyone else who was fishing the tournament."
Clunn, who was sixth heading into the final round, also had
big bass honors
for the day, a 5 pound, 8 ounce largemouth. He caught most of
his fish
around wood pilings in eight to 14 feet of water.

Wind cancels Vermont Top 150 semifinals
BURLINGTON, VT., Sept. 17, 1999 -- Hurricane Floyd
didn't make it to Lake
Champlain, but his accompanying wind and rain swept through the
Northeast
and forced cancellation of the third round of the Big Kmart BASSMASTER
Top
150 on Friday.
Winds ranging from 25 to 50 mph hammered Lake Champlain throughout
the
night and into the morning creating dangerous lake conditions
which
prompted Tournament Director Dewey Kendrick to cancel the semi-final
round.
The decision sent amateur contestants and all but 11 pros
home early. The
top 10 anglers after Thursday's round automatically advance to
Saturday's
finals, and since there was a tie for 10th place, 11 will be
competing for
the $100,000 first-place prize.
Finalists, in the order they were ranked after Thursday, include
Michael
Iaconelli of Woodbury Heights, N.J.; Randy Fite of Richards,
Texas; Randy
Dearman of Onalaska, Texas; Skeet Reese of Cotati, Calif.; Mark
Pack of
Mineola, Texas; Rick Clunn of Ava, Mo.; Zell Rowland of Montgomery,
Texas;
Dion Hibdon of Stover, Mo.; Takahiro Omori of Emory, Texas; Stanley
Mitchell of Fitzgerald, Ga.; and David Fritts of Lexington, N.C.
The cancellation pleased Robert T. Richardson of Palmetto,
Ga., who didn't
have to go out Friday to protect his 14-ounce lead in the amateur
division.
Richardson was awarded a $25,000 Ranger Boat and Mercury outboard
package
in an abbreviated ceremony Friday morning. David Andrews of Maynard,
Mass.
finished second and Keith P. Cleary of Harrison, N.Y. was third.
Winds were expected to diminish late Friday and Kendrick was
optimistic
that the pro division finals would be held Saturday. The championship
weigh-in begins at 3 p.m.

Three Texans among top five
New Jersey rookie takes Vermont Top 150 lead
BURLINGTON, VT., Sept. 16, 1999 -- Michael Iaconelli
found a way to put an
end to his string of bad second days in B.A.S.S. events Thursday
by fishing
like there is no tomorrow.
The 27-year old rookie from Woodbury Heights, N.J. compiled
an impressive
24 pound, five-bass limit here on Lake Champlain to take a 3
pound, 5 ounce
lead in the Big Kmart BASSMASTER Top 150. His two-day total includes
10
bass weighing 43-12.
Iaconelli, who was in fifth place after Wednesday's first
round, jumped
ahead of first-day leader Randy Fite of Richards, Texas who is
second with
40 pounds, 7 ounces. And like Iaconelli, Fite's limit included
all
largemouth bass from a lake best known for its big smallmouth
bass.
Rounding out the top five were Randy Dearman of Onalaska,
Texas with 38
pounds, 11 ounces; Skeet Reese of Cotati, Calif. with 38 pounds,
8 ounces
and Mark Pack of Mineola, Texas with 37 pounds, 5 ounces.
Iaconelli relied on a run-and-gun pattern of pitching 1/2-ounce
homemade
jigs around boat docks, sailboats and other isolated shallow
water cover
near shore. He said he's covering a lot of water and fishing
fast.
"I've had a bad habit of turning in bad second days after
good first days,
so this time I decided to fish like this was the last day,"
said Iaconelli.
"I didn't hold back anything."
That may have been a good strategy, given Friday's forecast
for heavy rains
and high winds that could whip Champlain into unsafe waters and
force
cancellation of the third day.
"A lot of guys are fishing jigs, but I doubt if anyone
is fishing this
clear water as shallow as I am," added Iaconelli. "I
also have a smallmouth
pattern, but the largemouth I'm catching are running larger."
Fite also is catching fish on a jig but is fishing slightly
deeper.
Robert Richardson of Palmetto, Ga. leads the amateur division
with 34
pounds, 6 ounces. David Andrews of Maynard, Mass. is second with
33-8 while
Keith Cleary of Harrison, N.Y. is third with 30-12.
The tournament concludes on Saturday when the top-10 pros
face off in a
one-day competition. The daily weigh-ins begin at 3 p.m.

Fite takes early lead in Vermont Top 150
Lake Champlain produces huge catch; smallmouth
dominate
BURLINGTON, VT Sept. 15, 1999 -- Texan Randy Fite found
the right
combination to take the first- day lead of the Big Kmart BASSMASTER
Top 150
on Lake Champlain.
Fite's 22 pound, 2 ounce limit of three largemouth and two
smallmouth
topped an impressive weigh-in in which anglers needed nearly
a 3 1/2- pound
average to get into the Top 40 pay-off spots.
Fite, a nine-time BASS Masters Classic qualifier from Richards,
Texas, said
he used a combination of lures and fished both deep and shallow
water to
catch the mixture of largemouth and smallmouth. He's sharing
the area with
good friend Rick Clunn, who is in 17th place.
"Today, I caught them better than Rick," said Fite.
"Tomorrow, he may be
the one with the 20-pound plus stringer."
Clear skies and little wind enabled the pros to prowl throughout
the
125-mile long lake that borders New York and Vermont. Champlain
produced
152 limits and the 776 fish weighed in by the pros averaged more
than three
pounds each.
Rounding out the top five are Shawn Penn of Benton, Ky. with
20 pounds, 15
ounces; Takahiro Omori of Emory, Texas with 20 pounds, 3 ounces;
Robert
Soley of Helmetta, N.J. with 20 pounds, and Michael Iaconelli
of Woodbury
Heights, N.J. with 19-12.
Most of the fish caught were smallmouth bass, although the
$1,000 big bass
honors went to Rick Lillegard of Atkinson, N.H. with a 6-4 largemouth.
Lillegard caught the fish on a jig around rocks in four feet
of water.
Leading the amateur division is Richard D. Keyser of Pine
City, N.Y. who
had five fish weighing 17 pounds, 13 ounces. David Andrews of
Maynard,
Maine is second with 17 pounds, 1 ounce. Ronald J. Pillars of
Kalamazoo,

The tournament concludes on Saturday when the top-10 pros
face off in a
one-day competition. The daily weigh-ins begin at 3 p.m.
On Saturday, area youngsters will compete in the popular BASSMASTER
CastingKids free contest, which will be held at the Marble Island
Community
Resort Marina in Colchester, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This
national
program was designed by B.A.S.S. CEO Helen Sevier to encourage
children to
learn the basics of casting, flipping and pitching.
The 31-year-old BASSMASTER Tournament Trail is the oldest
and most
prestigious bass fishing tournament circuit in the country. It
has set the
standard for credibility, professionalism and sportsmanship for
more than
three decades.
