Oklahoma Angler Hangs On To Win BASSMASTER
Oklahoma Central Invitational
Kansan Brent Chapman leads point race and qualifies for Bass Masters Classic as he finisheds fifth at Lake Eufaula tournament    
Eufaula, Okla., May 1, 1999 -- Brent Chapman of Lake Quivira secured a spot in the Bass Masters Classic with a fifth place finish in the fourth Central Invitational. He came out of the tournament with a 22 point lead over Jay Yelas in the points race for the Classic.

Chapman weighed in four fish the first day of the tournament and ended the day in 38th place. Day two saw him take a limit and jump to 8th place. On the final day, he fished his way on up the standings to end the tournament in fifth.

Fellow Kansans John Embry of Ft. Scott and Joe Pennington of Valley Center also weighed in fish. Embry finished in 199th in a field of about 300. Pennington finished 219th.

Leo Osborne, the local favorite and leader in the $213,000 BASSMASTER Oklahoma Central Invitational tournament did not have a fish today at 11:30. So, he switched from the 7 1/2 inch blue and pearl tail Gene Larew plastic worm with a 5/16ths ounce weight, which he a had used during the first two competition days, to a black/neon Strike King tube jig, with a lighter 3/8ths ounce slip-sinker. Osborne fished visible brush, 3- to 5-feet deep.

   "With the worm," he said, "the bait was sinking too fast, so I
changed to the tube bait with a lighter 3/16th ounce sinker and caught
my first fish almost immediately." All of the bass hit the tube jig as
it was falling. He caught his fifth fish at 2:30 p.m., so even with the
lighter tube bait he wasn't getting a lot of fish. But, he caught
enough.

   Osborne won the tournament with a three-day total of 15 bass -- the
maximum possible under the BASSMASTER 5-bass per day limit -- and a
cumulative total of 50 pounds.

   "I just came here wanting to fish, and I was completely relaxed,"
Osborne said. But it didn't last. "After I brought in that big [catch]
the first day and was leading, I thought there might be a chance to win
this tournament, and I've been nervous ever since." He is relaxing
tonight with the title and $42,000 in cash and awards.

   Gary Yamamoto brought in the heaviest catch of the tournament --
22-pounds, 4 ounces -- today to move from 11th place to finish second
with a three-day total of 12 bass weighing 42-13. Suprisingly, he fished
the same water as Osborne, only in a different way. Yamamoto used one of
his own 8-inch Yamamoto grubs, rigged with a 3/8ths ounce sinker and a
rattle. He pitched the grub to the bushes and then he slowly swam it
out. All of his strikes came as he reeled the lure way from the cover in
3 to 5-feet of water.

   Yamamoto is the owner of Gary Yamamoto Custom Bait Company. It is one of the sports best known lure companies and is well-known for it's soft
plastic lures. Yamamoto has fished B.A.S.S. events off and on for more
than a decade.

   Scott Rook of Little Rock, Ark., finished third with 14 bass weighing
36 pounds, 6 ounces. He fished a Texas rigged, smoke with red flake
Right Bite tube jig with a 5/16th ounce pegged sinker and 20-pound test
line.. Rook pitched and flipped the bait into 3 feet of water in the
back of coves and around boat docks where the bass were holding in about
3 feet of water. By fishing slightly deeper than other anglers, he was
able to fish behind those fishermen and still catch bass.

    BASS Masters Classic qualifying points: This event was the last of
four qualifying events on the BASSMASTER Central Invitational circuit
for the BASS Masters Classic world championship scheduled for New
Orleans, La., July 29-31. The top-ranked five anglers from this circuit,
based on points earned throughout the season, qualify for the Classic.
Points are earned based on rank of finish. Winners earn 300 points;
second place earns 299; third, 298, etc.

   These five anglers qualified for the BASS Masters Classic world
championship today: Brent Chapman of Kansas with 1,154 points; Jay
Yelas, Texas, 1,132; Kevin VanDam, Michigan, 1,102; Ken Cook, Oklahoma, 1,081; and John Sappington, Oklahoma, 1,078.

   Those who came close but did not qualify for the Classic here: Stacey
D. King, Missouri, 1,070; Randy Blaukat, Missouri, 1,051; Mike
McClelland, Arkansas, 1,047, Danny Correia, Massachusetts, 1,026 and
Mark Pack, Texas, 1,022. Some of those anglers may still have a shot at
the Classic, however.

   The final stop on the $6 million, 1998-1999 BASSMASTER Tournament
Trail, the KMART BASSMASTER MegaBucks tournament, will be held on Old Hickory Lake in Hendersonville, Tenn., (near Nashville) May 11-16. It is part of the KMART BASSMASTER Top 150 pro-am circuit and will qualify 25 of the elite 150 top-ranked pros for the BASS Masters Classic world championship. The final two days of MegaBucks, the 10 finalists will fish within within sight of fishing fans Saturday and Sunday - often within whispering distance - on 10 "holes" on Old Hickory.

   The 31-Year-Old BASSMASTER Tournament Trail is the oldest and most prestigious pro bass fishing tournament circuit. It has set the standard
for credibility, professionalism and sportsmanship for more than three
decades. Its late-summer BASS Masters Classic world championship and
Outdoor Show annually attracts more than 100,000 avid fishing fans and
top outdoor journalists each summer.

   Eufaula, OK, Apr. 29, 1999 -- Professional bass anglers competing for
shares of the $213,000 payout in the BASSMASTER Oklahoma Central
Invitational know what many people don't know -- that bass fishing isn't
always a fair weather sport. Even slight changes in water depth,
temperature and even wind direction can change the fishing conditions.
Pros in this week's BASSMSATER event had to make some rapid and frequent
adjustments.

   The 108,000 acre playing field, Lake Eufaula in Eufaula, Okla.,
surged up approximately 15 inches every 10 hours over the last day or so
as a result of the flooding in northern and western Oklahoma. The rising
water, accompanied by tremendous lines or floating debris that forced
the anglers to idle speed enroute to their fishing areas, has slowed
slightly ,and the Corps of Engineers expects only about a 7-inch rise
for the rest of the week. The fish will begin seeking shallower water,
which will make the catching somewhat more predictable in this always
unpredictable sport.

   "It's a new lake every hour as the water level changes," said
first-day leader Leo Osborne of the Lake Eufaula community of Crowder,.
Osborne, who is fishing his first Bass Anglers Sportsman Society pro
tournament, weighed the BASSMASTER limit of five bass to score 20
pounds, 1 ounce and nab a 2-pound, 15-ounce lead.

   "I'm fishing slow, and probably, a little deeper than most
fishermen," he said, "but that's probably going to change because the
lake is not supposed to rise quite as fast [tomorrow.] He had six bites
all day.

   Osborne had one short fish. And, it was costly. BASSMASTER rule
Number 16 states: "Bass presented for weigh-in which fail to measure the
official length shall accrue penalties at the rate of 1 pound for each
such bass."

   Sam Newby of Pocola, Okla., also weighed a daily limit to score 17
pounds, 2 ounces, but said it was a long time between bites. "I caught
my fish flipping a tube bait in flooded brush," he said, "but it was an
all-day trip.

   Brian W. Thomas of Kuttawa, Ky., weighed five bass for 16-12 to rank
third.

   Aaron D. Nelson of Earlham, Iowa, also weighed five bass to claim
fourth place with 16 pounds, 3 ounces. He's gotten to know this lake
quite well. After the BASSMASTER Invitational tournament on Missouri's
Table Rock Lake, he came to Lake Eufaula and spent 20 straight days
practicing.

   Ken Cook, the 1991 BASS Masters Classic world champion, who served as
a fisheries biologist with the state fish and game department in
Oklahoma before turning pro, has spent a lot of time on this lake. He is
fishing this event and weighed four bass today for 9 pounds, 13 ounces
to rank 28th. "There are a lot of 3-to-5-pound bass in this lake," Cook
said. "If the water settles, the catch will definitely improve for
everyone. Right now the fish are really scattered."

   This last of four qualifying events on the $6 million BASSMASTER
Tournament Trail will qualify for the BASS Masters Classic world
championship to be held in New Orleans July 29-31. Based on their
season's performance. The anglers have earned points in each event. A
first place finish earns 300 points, second place earns 299., etc. With
two competition days to go, Brent Chapman has the lead with 1,121
points. He is followed by Kevin VanDam and Stacey D. King, each with
1,115 (VanDam leads the B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year points race on the
KMART BASSMASTER Top 150 tournament circuit.) Jay Yelas is fourth with
1,097; John Sappington of Oklahoma is fifth with 1,090. Behind him are
Randy Blaukat and Ken Cook, each with 1,076; Marty McGuire with 1,035;
Peter Wenners, 1,012 and Todd Faircloth with 1,001.
