Gary Klein Earns $251,000
In BASS Quest Competition
Mount Vernon, Ill., August 15, 1999- Gary Klein of
Weatherford, Texas,
didn't catch the heaviest bass in the Illinois BASS Quest '99.
Nor was he
the fastest driver in the boating competition. But he did well
enough in
both divisions to earn $251,000 in World Championship Fishing's
inaugural
fishing/boating shootout here Sunday.
Klein, 41, a former B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year and seven-time
tournament
champion, raced his ProCraft/Mercury rig to a fourth-place finish
in the
boater's challenge Sunday with a combined time of 2:36:31 for
two runs
through a twisting, turning obstacle course.
He finished fifth in the fishing tournament with 23 pounds,
11 ounces,
catching three daily five bass limits on three different lakes
in southern
Illinois. He used a 1/4-ounce black/blue Lunker Lure Rattleback
Jig and a
1/2-ounce white Vibratron spinnerbait for most of his catch on
all three
lakes.
Klein's overall score of 92 points, combining his fishing
and boating
performances, edged Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., who had
91 points.
VanDam, the 1999 B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year, was third in boating
with
2:34:76 and sixth in fishing with 23 pounds, 4 ounces. He collected
$100,000 cash for second.
Rick Clunn of Ava., Mo., earned $50,000 for third with 82
points. Clunn, a
four-time Classic champion, was third in fishing with 25 pounds,
8 ounces,
and 12th in boating with a time of 2:46:41.
A crowd of 10,000 packed the Rend Lake Resort to see 22 of
America's best
bass anglers weigh in their catches and their boat-handling skills.
The
field represented a mix of veteran pros, current champions and
up-and-coming anglers. Total payout was $525,000 which - unlike
other
sportfishing events - was provided by team sponsors, not the
competitors.
Klein competed for Team ProCraft, while VanDam represented
Team MotorGuide
and Clunn was on the Nitro team.
The father-son team of Denny and Chad Brauer of Camdenton,
Mo., claimed the
top two spots in the fishing division of BASS Quest '99.
Denny Brauer, 1998 BASS Masters Classic champion and runnerup
two weeks ago in the 1999 Classic, checked in 13 bass weighing
29 pounds, 2 ounces. He
caught 8 pounds, 6 ounces in Sunday's final round on Crab Orchard
Lake.
During the week, he fished three Strike King lures, a 3/8-ounce
Denny
Brauer Pro Model Jig, a 1/2-ounce Premier Elite Spinnerbait and
a 4-inch
Pro Model Tube lure. His second-round catch of 16 pounds, 16
pounds, 13
ounces on Crab Orchard Lake put him in the lead to stay.
Chad Brauer stayed near the top each day, finishing with 25
pounds, 15
ounces. The elder Brauer earned $30,000 for finishing fourth
overall with
78 points after ranking 17th in boating. Chad Brauer shared fifth
with
Alton Jones of Waco, Texas. They each had 73 points and earned
$12,500.
The boating challenge added a new wrinkle to professional
fishing
competitions, and several of the top pros clearly enjoyed racing
their bass
boats through the 4,000-foot BASS Quest course, which featured
two
1,000-foot straightaways, twin 360 degree turns and a serpentine
track that
taxed their driving skills.
Ron Shuffield of Bismarck, Ark., set a course record of 1:13:82
in his
first run and a total of 2:30:36 in his Johnson-powered Triton
boat. He
narrowly edged Hank Parker of Denver, N.C., a two-time Classic
winner who
came out of a nine-year retirement to compete in the BASS Quest
event.
Parker, who used a special Shifter prop on his Ranger/Mercury
rig, finished
in 2:30:68.
Illinois BASS Quest '99 featured three mornings of fishing
on Kinkaid, Crab
Orchard and Rend lakes. The boating course was set up each afternoon
in a
cove at Rend Lake Resort. The event was sanctioned by the 600,000-member
Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, which also conducts the $6 million
BASSMASTER Tournament Trail. A series of similar events are planned
for
2000, according to World Championship Fishing officials.

Zell Rowland Retains Top Spot
In $525,000 BASS Quest
Mount Vernon, Ill., August 14, 1999 - Zell Rowland
of Montgomery, Texas,
demonstrated a combination of bass-catching skills and bass boat
handling
to take the second-round lead of $525,000 Illinois BASS Quest
'99 here
Saturday.
Rowland, the first-round leader in bass fishing competition
on Kinkaid Lake
Friday, held on to second after a morning of fishing on Crab
Orchard Lake
near Carterville. His time of 1 minute, 26 seconds in the BASS
Quest
boaters challenge was good enough for ninth in that competition,
giving him
91 points overall.
Winner of the event after Sunday's final rounds on Rend Lake
earns
$251,000, the richest prize in sport fishing.
Two time bass fishing world champion Hank Parker, who came
out of a
nine-year retirement from competition to enter the unique event,
won
Saturday's boating division with a time of 1:16:04, nearly three
seconds
faster than Klein's run.
Parker, who raced in NASCAR events briefly after quitting
professional
fishing and now owns a NASCAR team, credited boat-rigging magician
Jerry
Jaco for his Ranger/Mercury rig's performance. He used a prop
that shifts
from low to high pitch for better handling and fast acceleration
in turns.
Contestants run one at a time on a slalom-like course that
includes twin
360 degree turns and numerous sharp bends. The course challenges
the
drivers' boat handling skills and their boats' acceleration capabilities
rather than top speeds. Under WCF rules, fishing accounts for
60 percent of
a contestant's total score and boating provides 40 percent.
Rowland's catch of 10 bass for two days weighed 20 pounds,
5 ounces, just 7
ounces behind 1998 BASS Masters Classic champion Denny Brauer,
who caught
16 pounds, 13 ounces from Crab Orchard for 20 pounds, 12 ounces
overall.
Brauer ranks third in the combined fishing/boating standings
with 86
pounds. Gary Klein of Weatherford, Texas, has 90 pounds for second
after
turning in the second-fastest time in boating of 1:19:26.
Brauer, bass fishing's richest all-time money winner, caught
his bass in
Crab Orchard on a 3/8-ounce Denny Brauer Pro Model Strike King
jig and a
Strike King spinnerbait.
Brauer's son, Chad, is third in the fishing standings after
two days of
fishing with 16 pounds, 5 ounces. Eyeing two large shares of
the total
$525,000 prize purse, Chad Brauer said, "This is a good
day for the Brauer
Corporation."
Illinois BASS Quest '99 combines three mornings of bass fishing
on the
three southern Illinois lakes with two afternoons of performance
boat
handling. It is being conducted by World Championship Fishing
and
sanctioned by the 600,000-member Bass Anglers Sportsman Society
(B.A.S.S.).
The 22-angler, invitation-only lineup includes veteran professional
anglers
and up-and-coming competitors from the BASSMASTER Tournament
Trail.
Mark Davis of Mount Ida, Ark., a two-time B.A.S.S. Angler
of the Year, is
fourth with 15 pounds, 13 ounces, and four-time Classic champion
Rick Clunn
of Ava, Mo., is fifth with 15-11.
The second-day weigh-in attracted crowd of about 5,000 to
John A. Logan
College, where an Outdoor Festival was being held in conjunction
with the
tournament.
Shortly before the weigh-in, Illinois Gov. George H. Ryan,
who served as
honorary weighmaster, signed House Bill 2147, which will enhance
coordination and promotion of tourism in Illinois. He also announced
$451,000 in grants to help six local tourism councils develop
attractions
for visitors.
Illinois BASS QUEST '99 is the inaugural event of a planned
series of
fishing/boating competitions in 2000. As in NASCAR racing, major
corporations - including several outside the fishing industry
- financed
"teams" and will share in the prize money. The angler/drivers
were not
required to pay an entry fee.
Rowland represents the Yamaha Team, while Klein is on Team
ProCraft and
Brauer is competing for the Chevy Trucks Team.

Texas Angler Takes Lead
In $525,000 BASS Quest
CARTERVILLE, Ill., August 13, 1999 - Zell Rowland of
Montgomery, Texas,
jumped into an early lead today for the $251,000 first-place
prize in
Illinois BASS QUEST '99 - the richest payoff in competitive fishing
and
boating.
His five bass limit of 9 pounds, 6 ounces from Kinkaid Lake
led the field
of 22 professional anglers in the $525,000 contest. But two more
days of
fishing, each on a different lake, and a unique boating competition
remain
before the winner is decided.
The event, conducted by World Championship Fishing and sanctioned
by Bass
Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.), combines bass fishing with
performance boat handling in a spectator-oriented, made-for-TV
event.
The winner will be determined by points earned in three mornings
of fishing
and two afternoons of boating on a course designed to test drivers'
boat
handling abilities more than all-out speed. The 22-angler, invitation-only
lineup includes who's who in professional fishing, with a list
of rising
stars, veteran pros and current champions on the BASSMASTER Tournament
Trail.
Rowland, 42, runner up for B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year on
the pro tour this
year, caught a limit of five bass, including a 3-pound, 12-ounce
largemouth
that tied Ava, Mo., superstar Rick Clunn's biggest bass for the
$1,000
daily big bass prize. Rowland was fishing a black/blue Riverside
Big Claw
crawfish bait around wood and rock cover in the shallow eastern
end of the
lake.
Although Kinkaid is 2,750 acres, much of the tournament field
crowded into
the same area, which required a half-hour boat drive at idle
speed to
reach. They were joined in the narrow channels by more than 60
"spectator
boats" following the fishing heroes.
Chad Brauer of Camdenton, Mo., flipped a Strike King Pro Model
Flippin'
Tube - identical to the tube lure his father, Denny, used to
win the BASS
Masters Classic last summer - to take second with 8 pounds, 15
ounces for
five fish. Western pro Dean Rojas of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.,
ranks third
with 7 pounds, 15 ounces, while Jay Yelas of Tyler, Texas, is
fourth with 7
pounds, 11 ounces, and Brent Chapman of Lake Quivira, Kan., is
fifth with
6-pounds, 14 ounces.
A drive-through weigh-in was held at John A. Logan College
here before a
crowd of approximately 2,500. The contestants then traveled to
Rend Lake
Resort near Mt. Vernon, Ill., for time trials on a twisting,
turning
boating course.
Illinois BASS QUEST '99 is the first event of its kind in
professional
fishing and boating, and the competitors expressed excitement
about being
able to show off their boat driving skills. They are required
to use stock
bass boats and motors, which must exceed a minimum weight.
"This is one of the coolest events in sportfishing,"
said California pro
Skeet Reese. Although he ranked 19th from the first round of
fishing, he
expects to do well in the boating competition. "Fishing
is work," he said
as he prepared for Friday's practice run. "Now, we're going
to have fun."
Competition resumes Saturday on Crab Orchard Lake here. The
pros will fish
Rend Lake Sunday morning. Timed boating runs will be held at
Rend Lake
Resort Saturday and Sunday afternoons beginning at 3 p.m. Under
WCF rules,
fishing accounts for 60 percent of a contestant's total score
and boating
provides 40 percent.
Illinois BASS QUEST '99 is the inaugural event of a planned

fishing/boating competitions in 2000. As in NASCAR racing, major

Bass Fishing's Extreme Games Take Off
MONTGOMERY, Ala., Aug. 5, 1999 - The fishing version
of NASCAR/Winston Cup racing debuts next week when the first
World Championship Fishing (WCF) competition is held in southern
Illinois.
Illinois BASS QUEST '99 is a three-day contest that will combine
power
boating with bass tournament-style angling in a high-stakes competition.
It
will be held Aug. 13-15 in the Carterville, Ill., area on Kinkaid,
Crab
Orchard and Rend lakes. A whopping prize purse of $525,000 will
be paid to
the top 22 teams, including $251,000 for the winner - the largest
payout in
the industry.
WCF is a new organization sanctioned by the 600,000-member
Bass Anglers
Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.), which last week staged the BASS
Masters
Classic®, bass fishing's world championship competition,
on the Louisiana
Delta and at the Superdome in New Orleans.
The WCF competition field is from the BASSMASTER Tournament
Trail, which
after three decades has developed a reputation as the sport's
most elite
circuit. Former world champions, season points leaders, and the
hottest
up-and-coming professional anglers have been invited to attend.
They will
be supported by key sponsors from inside and outside the fishing
industry.
In the lineup are former Classic champions Denny Brauer, David
Fritts, Hank
Parker, George Cochran, Mark Davis and Rick Clunn. Other top
names include
Gary Klein, Roland Martin, Kevin VanDam and newly crowned Classic
champion
Davy Hite.
"It's time to think outside the box," said Hank
Parker, a two-time Classic
champion who is coming out of retirement from tournament fishing
to
compete. "The goal of WCF is to broaden bass fishing's fan
base, create
'team' relationships between major corporations and an elite
field of pros,
and provide a new marketing venue for companies whose products
aren't
associated with the fishing industry."
Parker should know, since he has his own NASCAR racing team.
As in NASCAR,
trademark licensing, merchandising, and television exposure will
play key
roles in the WCF program. Illinois BASS QUEST '99 will be taped
for
broadcast on the FOX Sports network on Thanksgiving Day, and
on-site
spectators will be able to watch the fishing and boating competitions
as
they unfold on the water.
Tournament bass fishing was introduced by B.A.S.S. more than
three decades
ago. However, the concept of high performance bass boating adds
a new
wrinkle to the sport. While the same bass boats used in the fishing
competition will run the obstacle course, they will have to meet
certain
guidelines created to meet WCF's stringent safety and performance
rules.
All boats must be standard production models with no internal
structural
modifications - although a daily "pit stop" break will
allow teams to
re-rig the boats for the afternoon of performance boating.
During the pit break, crews will add custom-fitted cowlings
to the bows of
the boats for aerodynamics, substitute performance racing props
and adjust
the fuel load to increase the performance of the rigs, which
are provided
by most of the major engine and boat manufacturers in the bass
boating
industry.
Drivers will run an obstacle course on Rend Lake that emphasizes
boat
handling skills. Only one boat will be allowed on the course
at a time with
the object being to clock the fastest time. The course will test
maneuvering and agility rather than top-end speeds. As in a downhill
skiing
slalom course, buoys will be positioned strategically in the
water to make
the course more challenging. To strike a buoy will mean to loose
valuable
time and points.
"This is not intended to be a drag race to the finish
line," added Don
Corkran, a WCF official. "These contestants are among the
best boat jockeys
in professional fishing, and our course will challenge their
boating and
driving skills. Our goal is to ensure the drivers' safety while
making the
competition a thrill for spectators and TV viewers to watch."
Each competition day will begin with a morning round of bass
fishing in
full view of spectators and camera crews. Fishing concludes at
midday with
a daily weigh-in, followed by the pit break and then afternoon
power
boating. As an added attraction during the afternoon boating
phase, Women
In Water Sports will be demonstrating their water-skiing skills
and tricks.
Angler/drivers will fish under a five-bass, 12-inch minimum
rule with 4
ounces deducted from the overall weight for any fish not returned
alive to
the lakes. The first two days' fishing is on Kinkaid and Crab
Orchard
lakes, and the championship round will be Sunday on Rend Lake
with a
drive-through weigh-in beginning at 1 p.m. The championship round
of power
boating will follow.
The winner will be determined by the cumulative weight of
bass caught in
three fishing days plus the elapsed time in the boaters challenge.
The
fishing competition accounts for 60 percent of the total score
and boating
provides 40 percent.
