BASSMASTER Western Invitational
Lake Oroville - Nov. 11-13, 1999 - Oroville, Calif.

Day 3 Story

Aaron Martens begins his B.A.S.S. winning ways by capturing Oroville title

Drop-shot rig shows its power
as the latest California finesse rage

Oroville, Calif., Nov. 13, 1999 -- Everyone knew that it was only a matter
of time before Aaron Martens, the 27-year-old phenom from Castaic,
California, found his way to the winner's circle - and the $148,439
California BASSMASTER Western Invitational turned out to be the event.

Finishing strong with his best limit of the three-day, tournament, an 11-7
limit of Lake Oroville spotted bass, Martens stepped up from second place
with a 32-12 winning total to take home the victor's purse of $2,500 in
cash and a fully-rigged Ranger boat/Mercury outboard package valued at
$26,000.

Noted for his uncanny knack of always being around fish and his willingness to go with his instincts, Martens found himself on an extremely deep spotted bass bite that fit him better than a coat of paint. Having only
pre-fished a handful of days, Martens found his bass from 40 to 60 feet on
long tapering points that eventually dropped off sharply into 70 feet and
beyond.

"Sometime a short pre-fish is a good pre-fish because you don't have time
to figure out three or four patterns," remarked Martens. "I found one
pattern and thought it was a really good one."

"My bite didn't really turn on until 11 o'clock. The period between 11 and
2 o'clock was vital for me. because that's when I got all my weight. Today,
this program worked well. I had about 8 1/2 pounds before 11 and then from 11 to 2 I caught ten two-pounders. It was awesome."

Although Oroville does turn out a fair assortment of largemouth bass at
other times of the year, the overwhelming majority of fish taken at this
event were spotted bass, most of which were caught from very deep water as
they cruised in huge wolf packs feeding on the prime forage source, pond
smelt.

Drop-shotting, the technique Martens employed and one used by many of his competitors, will undoubtedly receive national headlines after the tale of
Oroville is told. Using 6-pound P-line, Martens rigged his drop shot with a
1/4-ounce Japanese Bakudan weight placed at the end of his line with a
Palomar knot tied 20-inches up holding a 3 1/2-inch Robo Body Shad
(watermelon) in place. This refined dropper rig, cast on a 6'10" MegaBass
Destroyer spinning rod and Daiwa Emblem-Z reel, put the bait off the bottom just enough to elicit strikes from spots actively feeding on smelt.

Although Martens did start off his day with a 1/4-ounce, Texas-rigged
41/2-inch straight-tail Robo Worm (baby bass), it was clear that most of
the damage on Oroville was being done with drop shot rigs. The key was
finding the bait and then staying with it as marauding spots pushed the
bait schools on and off structure areas.

Going into the final day the top seven fishermen were separated by only one
pound 13 ounces. Any slip up would mean certain disaster. Unfortunately,
problems developed during the final round for Neil Howard of Phoenix ,
Arizona, who had led the tournament for two days, but plummeted to eighth
with a small, 7-9 final-day limit for a 29-6 total.

But, while some found tough times on Saturday, others like Mike O'Shea of
Thousand Oaks, California took advantage of the tight standings to make a
spectacular run from 23rd to second by turning in nothing but the heaviest
limit of the event, a 13-15 creel that pushed his total to 32-3. However,
unlike the other leaders, O'Shea stuck with 1/4-ounce, Texas rigged 4
1/2-inch Robo Worm (baby bass) approach that produced all but two fish of his entire three-day catch. Those final two bass turned out to be two of
his best and were nabbed on a jury-rigged, drop shot setup that O'Shea
utilized late in the final round.

The battle for third place was true test of wills between a pair of young
anglers, 24-year-old Ryan White of Auburn, California and 21-year-old
Brett Hite of Phoenix, Arizona. Tied for third after the second round,
White and Hite both finished strong with White edging ahead by just two
ounces with a 9-11 limit to cap a 30-13 total. Hite's final round limit
weighed 9-9 for a 30-11 three-day effort.

After this second event on the BASSMASTER Western Invitational circuit,
Aaron Martens leads the points hit parade with 594 followed by John Murray (Arizona) 588, Brett Hite (Arizona) 585, Mike O'Shea (578) and Kotaro Kiriyama (Arizona) 575. Complete Points Standings

Day 2 Story

Arizona's Neil Howard learns from Aaron Martens and holds onto first

Mere ounces still separate the leaders from the pack as the final round
promises to be a cliff-hanger

Oroville, Calif., Nov. 12, 1999 -- After yesterday's round, no one really
knew what to think about the leader, Neil Howard of Phoenix, Arizona .
Since he had caught all his fish off his partner's water, who just happened
to be 1999 Bass Masters Classic qualifier, Aaron Martens, a lot of people
figured he would be long gone by day two. They figured wrong.

Learning just enough from his first day with Martens to refine his own
pattern, Howard responded with a solid limit weighing 10 pounds, four
ounces to retain the lead at 21-13.

"Aaron got me straightened out on a pattern that may prevail in this
tournament. I had caught some deeper fish (prior to the tournament) but I
wasn't fishing deep enough. So, it definitely helped fishing with Aaron,"
remarked Howard, a 45-year-old owner of a Phoenix heating and air
conditioning company .

"I fished the main lake every day since I've been here. But, I really
didn't know a lot about this lake and I had to learn where these deeper
fish were located. Today, I even found a couple of new places. I guess I
proved them wrong."

However, most of his fellow anglers didn't know that Howard is no stranger
to the BASSMASTER Tournament trail having competed for two years in the
central invitationals before the inaugural western division event two years
ago. Having grown up in Kentucky, Howard has a broad range of fishing
experience and perhaps more important, a desire to learn.

"I'm not a deep fisherman. Where I come from , we throw real jigs at real
trees. For me to come here and do real well is quite surprising. But, I've
lived in the West for 19 years and you've got to learn how to do this out
here if you're going to stay with the pack."

In this tournament, "the pack" is not far behind as the bigger bass
remained scarce, making a 10-pound limit something to shoot for. In fact,
the top seven anglers going into the final round of competition tomorrow
and only separated by one pound, 13 ounces. About the weight of an average Lake Oroville spotted bass.

Making the story all the more interesting is this: The very guy who helped
Howard out on the first day, Aaron Martens of Castaic, California, now
trails him by just eight ounces. For westerners familiar with Martens'
winning ways, his second day 10-2 limit for a 21-5 total is the kind of
consistency expected from this young wizard. In other words, the slightest
stumble from Howard will most likely play into Martens' game plan.
Moreover, this deep, worm or spoon type of fishing suits Martens just fine,
a fisherman known for his ability to improvise as the situation demands.

With another day of stunningly perfect weather, the increasing high
pressure, low wind and mid-70 air temperatures, some anglers are predicting
that the fish will get more finicky. Today, there were some reports that
the spotted bass may be suspending with the baitfish and even moving
deeper. Since 20 to 40 feet is relatively shallow for this event and many
are catching bass in 50 to 60 feet, going deeper seems almost unbelievable
to anglers not familiar with these extreme deep-water techniques.

For Howard and Martens, there is nothing secure about their positions, not
only in terms of the weights, but also in the quality of the anglers close
behind. Knotted in third is Ryan White of Auburn, California with Brett
Hite of Phoenix, Arizona who found themselves sharing third place with a
two-day total of 21-2. The 24-year-old White got there on the strength of a
10-pound limit that pushed him up from seventh, while Hite slipped a notch
from second with 9-12.

"I just got second in a team tournament up here with 11-2 and that's what I
weighed yesterday," noted White, who works at his family's marine
dealership, Galaxie Boats in Auburn. " I figured I could get 11 pounds a
day, but I only got 10 today.

"I've been pre-fishing up here for awhile and all the other times I've
practiced this much, it really screwed me up. This time it helped to go out
and actually locate the fish. I'm catching the same fish that I've caught
for a month and a half."

In yet another tie, two of the young guns of western bass fishing found
themselves dead-locked in fifth place. With a two-day total of 20-1, Robert
Lee, the man who tallied back-to-back BASSMASTER victories on the
California Delta and set a B.A.S.S. record for heaviest winning weight in a
three-day, five-bass limit event (78-03) found himself face-to-face with
another Golden Stater, Mark Rizk - someone hungry to get back to the
Classic. Lee got to fifth in a strong surge from 22nd with a10-10 limit
while Rizk held onto to fifth with 8-14 for the day.

Day 1 Story

Arizona's Neil Howard gets tenuous hold on first place

Mere ounces separate much of the field
as roaming spotted bass force
anglers to fish at 50-foot depths

Oroville, Calif., Nov. 11, 1999 -- With shirt sleeve weather deserving of
a California post card, the setting for the $148,439 California BASSMASTER Western Invitational at Lake Oroville Nov.11-13 was nearly picture-perfect for the first round of competition.

Touted as one of the best fisheries in the West, Oroville responded in fine
fashion, producing solid numbers of spotted bass, but no real heavyweights.
The result of this numbers game was huge log jam on the leader board, not
only at the very top, but all the way through the top fifty fishermen.

At the very top was Neil Howard of Phoenix, Arizona with a five-fish limit
weighing 11 pounds nine ounces, followed closely by two more Valley of the
Sun fishermen, Brett Hite and Jim Furr, both with 11 pounds , six ounces
and both from Phoenix.

Getting any separation from the field will be the toughest task of all,
especially in a lake like Oroville dominated by spotted bass and one that
only rarely produces bigger largemouths when the calendar turns the page
into November.

Mark Rizk of Antelope, California, a 1999 Bass Masters Classic qualifier
from the western division, found himself tied in fifth with yet another
Californian and Classic veteran, Aaron Martens at 11 pounds, three ounces.

"A lot of what's happening now is luck. Being in the right place at the
right time," said Rizk about the sometimes frustrating movements of spotted
bass as they follow the bait around.

"But the skill part is knowing enough of those right places. I've got eight
spots I'm fishing and of those, three paid off big-time today and the other
five not at all."

For Rizk and most of the fishermen on the upper end of the scale today,
there was little doubt about the "western" flavor of this event. Where else
would you routinely hear fishermen talking about catching their limits at
50 feet deep? Whether it is worms, jigs or spoons doing the damage, the
Oroville spots are staying deep and actively chasing pond smelt, the
primary forage in this impoundment.

In a homecoming of sorts, Gary Klein, recent winner of the World
Championship Fishing (WCF) event held in Illinois, returned to Oroville to
try his hand on the lake that started his career in professional fishing.
Even though Klein just snuck onto the leader page in 49th place with 8-10,
he thinks Oroville is fishing just as expected. Earlier in the week, Klein
had his sights on some schools of three-pound spots, but come tournament
time, they were nowhere to be found.

"I had some fish located that I thought could give me a 15-pound bag today,
but everything has got to be right to get those fish to bite. They're
there! You can see them on the locator. I lost a big tub today, a big
spotted bass that might have weighed four to four and a half pounds. I know a big fish like that one will be a key to this event," remarked Klein.

"To win this event, I figured I would have to catch two kicker fish a day.
So, now the pressure is on. I still predict that it will take 34 to 36
pounds to win it."

With weather patterns likely to build the high pressure over northern
California, bringing more of the same balmy temperatures and California
sunshine, Klein may be right on the money. At least for the well-traveled
Klein, this California tournament will be a break from the road wars. Since
he's staying at his mom's place near the lake, naturally the accommodations
include home cooking.

"I'll be sitting on her front lawn when the rest of these guys are still
messing with their tackle."
