Gamble pays off for Berry
in New Mexico Invitational

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N. M., Oct. 2, 1999 -- For years Art Berry has read stories of the gambles bass pros make to try to win big tournaments, little dreaming one day he'd have to make just such a gamble himself.

With just two hours left in the New Mexico BASSMASTER Invitational on
Elephant Butte Reservoir, and realizing he needed one more big bass to win,
Berry left the area he'd been fishing for the previous two days and made a
35 mile run up the lake to a single beaver hut he'd seen in practice. On
his first flip of a plastic lizard into the underwater brush, Berry caught
his winning bass, a solid four pounder that gave him a three day total of
26 pounds, 6 ounces, and his first BASSMASTER Tournament Trail victory.

"I had been fishing for schooling bass in a small cove not far from the
launch site in Marina del Sur," explained a jubilant Berry, who began the
day in fourth place nearly five pounds behind second round leader Jim
Wells, "but the action really slowed. I thought about going down the lake
and trying to catch one smallmouth to fill out my limit, but I knew I
wouldn't win if I did. So I went the opposite direction and tried for the
win, and fortunately it worked out. I only stayed at the beaver hut 20
minutes before I had to come back to weigh in."

Berry fished a shad-colored PRADCO Fat Free Shad crankbait for his
schooling fish, then changed to a small Zoom plastic lizard for his winning
largemouth.

Jim Wells, the rookie from Idaho who held the second day lead, finished
second with 22 pounds, 3 ounces, after catching just two bass the final
day. He caught all his fish Carolina rigging a Fidgit, a plastic worm made
in Idaho and similar to a Slug-Go. He worked the edge of a weedline in a
wide flat just below the Narrows on the 35,000 acre lake but had to fight a
stiff north wind for much of the final day.

Sean Minderman of Spokane, Wa., finished third with a total of 14 bass
weighing 20 pounds, 12 ounces, out-dueling John Murray of Phoenix who
captured fifth with 19-2, and Kevin Johnson who finished fifth with 18-14.
All three anglers fished small, finesse-type plastic lures around deep
rocky points in the lake's lower basin and fairly close to the launch ramp.

Elephant Butte lived up to its reputation as an excellent but challenging
bass fishery that supports healthy populations of both largemouth and
smallmouth bass. Throughout the three-day event anglers were forced to
continually adjust to changing conditions and moving fish. Some fishermen
caught their limits on topwaters while others caught fish as deep as 40
feet.

Day 2 Story

Rookie Takes Over Lead
in New Mexico Invitational

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N. M., Oct. 1, 1999 -- Jim Wells, a rookie fishing his first professional bass tournament, brought in a limit of five smallmouth bass weighing 13 pounds, 2 ounces to take over the lead after two days of competition in the New Mexico BASSMASTER Western Invitational on Elephant Butte Reservoir. The Fruitland, Idaho angler has a total of 19 pounds, 9 ounces.

That's a lead of more than two pounds over Ray Ortiz, who like Wells
brought in a limit of smallmouths and has a total of 17 pounds, 5 ounces.
Ortiz, a former professional rodeo bull rider, has fished Elephant Butte
for more than 15 years and was considered an early favorite, but he brought
in only three bass the first day and stood in 15th place.

Eric Parra of Moreno Valley, Calif. holds third with 16-0, followed by Art
Berry of Lakeside, Calif. with 14-11 and Phoenix, Ariz. angler John Murray
with 14-8.

Changing weather conditions continued to plague many of the 237
contestants. Calm water the first day changed to near whitecaps under a
stiff southeast wind and forced many anglers to change fishing patterns.
First round leader Rich Iannolo failed to weigh in a bass and fell to 12th,
and another early favorite, Allen Ruddick of nearby Las Cruces, N.M.
brought in just one fish and fell from fourth to 13th.

Wells caught his fish by working a Carolina rig plastic worm along a
grassline on the edge of a shallow flat, while Ortiz found his bass
suspended 12- to 15-feet deep along steep rock bluffs. Other anglers
caught bass on topwaters, crankbaits, and deep drop-shot rigs, but most
admitted they had to fish a lot of different areas throughout the day.

The New Mexico BASSMASTER Western Invitational is one of four Western
Division qualifying tournaments for the BASS Masters Classic. The final
weigh-in will begin at 3 p.m. at The Marina Del Sur on Saturday.

Iannolo takes early lead

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N. M., Sept. 30, 1999 -- Bright skies, a high barometer, and finicky bass combined to make fishing extremely challenging during the opening round of the New Mexico BASSMASTER Invitational on Elephant Butte Reservoir for all but a handful of Western anglers hoping to use this tournament as their first step on the road to the BASS Masters Classic.

The field of 237 anglers brought in just three 5-bass limits, but it was
size, not numbers that counted today. Rich Iannolo of Menifee, Calif.,
caught only four fish, but they weighed 11 pounds, 6 ounces, enough to take
the lead by nearly three pounds over second-place angler Art Berry, who
brought in four fish weighing 8 pounds, 9 ounces.

Eric Parra stands in third with four bass weighing 8-0, while Allen Ruddick
and Aaron Martens hold fourth and fifth with 7-12 and 7-11, respectively.
Martens was the only angler in the top five to bring in a limit of five
bass.

"Fishing is difficult because the bass are in transition between summer and
fall patterns," explained Ruddick, who lives in nearby Las Cruces and
fishes Elephant Butte often. "On top of that, we've just recently had a
full moon during which the bass probably fed all night, so they just aren't
very hungry right now.

"I probably fished 20 different spots today just to catch my four bass."

Iannolo admitted his own day was far from easy, and said he visied several
areas in the lower half of the lake. He caught his largest bass, a
4-pound, 8-ounce largemouth, early but then fished several hours before
catching his next one.

While Iannolo concentrated on catching largemouths, which are normally
heavier fish on Elephant Butte, the majority of anglers decided to spend
this first day chasing smaller but more numerous smallmouth bass. Two
years ago state fisheries biologists lowered the minimum length limit
statewide on smallmouth from 14 to 12 inches but retained a 14-inch length
limit on largemouths. This is the first tournament in more than 30 years
of B.A.S.S. tournament competition that contestants have fished under two
different size regulations in the same event.

The New Mexico BASSMASTER Western Invitational is one of four Western
Division qualifying tournaments for the BASS Masters Classic. Daily
weigh-ins will begin at 3 p.m. at The Marina Del Sur.

A free CastingKids event will be presented by Zebco and BIG Kmart on

between the ages of 7 and 14 may also compete for prizes and a chance to go on to the state CastingKids competition. All equipment is provided.
