Kansan Laster ends in 251st, 180th in total point race
Yager Holds on to win Florida invitational

OKEECHOBEE CITY, Fla., Jan. 22, 2000 - Randy Yager, benefiting from his outstanding first day catch on his partner's fish, brought in four bass during the final round to win the BASSMASTER Florida Invitational with a three-day total of 13 bass weighing 37 pounds, 11 ounces. It was the first Tournament Trail victory for the 35-year old insurance claims adjuster, and brought him $42,000 in cash and merchandise prizes.

Second place went to Okeechobee guide Larry Wright, who finished with 14 bass weighing 36-14, while Virginia pro David Dudley claimed third with 14 bass weighing 36-1. Roger Schofield of Killen, AL captured fourth with 34-4, while another local angler, David Eng of Okeechobee, finished fifth with 33-6.

Yager fished a black 3/8 ounce Picasso jig as well as a 3/8 ounce white
Picasso spinner bait around open holes in the vegetation in a part of the
lake known as the Dyess Ditch. Although it was his first time to fish the
massive south Florida lake, Yager is no stranger to fishing vegetation.
His home waters, Lake Champlain, Vermont, and the St. Lawrence River in New York, are both filled with vegetation.

"I just found an area of the lake that looked good and started fishing,"
said Yager. "I'm absolutely amazed at the number of bass in this lake. I
just kept fishing the same area over and over, because I knew the fish were
there.

"All I did was pitch the jig to an open spot in the grass, shake it, and
then lift it up. I never felt any strikes. The fish were just there."

Wright, a veteran Lake Okeechobee guide, had all his bass the final morning
by 7:45 a.m., despite water temperatures that had fallen as low as 59
degrees. He used a 3/8 ounce Hildebrandt spinner bait around thick
hydrilla in Fisheating Creek. He used 10 pound test line to try to
generate more strikes, but paid dearly when he lost one fish he estimated
would weigh at least 8 pounds.

David Dudley captured third by pitching and flipping a Zoom Brush Hog into holes in the vegetation along the north shore, one of three areas targeted
by nearly all of the 321 tournament competitors. At times, as many as 80
to 100 anglers were within sight of each other in these areas.

Roger Schofield of Killen, AL and David Eng of here in Okeechobee were two anglers who did not fish in the crowds. Schofield targeted bass on top of a shallow ridge in the Kissimmee River just seven miles from the weigh-in and fished it with a Carolina rig Chompers lizard; and Eng fished the Rim Canal on the northeast side of the lake, also using a Carolina rig Gambler plastic worm to claim fifth.

Ralph Laster, the only Kansan, finished in 251st. His first day weigh-in was with three fish, but was unable to weigh in any fish on the last two days.

Kansan Laster slips to 221st after no fish day
Randy Yager maintains day 2 lead

OKEECHOBEE CITY, Fla., Jan. 21, 2000 - Randy Yager, forced to change to completely different water after taking the first round lead on his
partner's fish, showed he can find Lake Okeechobee's finicky bass by
himself by bringing 6 pounds, 11 ounces to the scales Friday and keeping
his lead after two daysof the BASSMASTER Florida Invitational. His two-day total of nine bass weighs 27-15.

That gives him a lead of 1 pound, 15 ounces over local angler David Eng,
who holds second place with 26 pounds. Eng, well-known as one of the top
competitors on this huge lake, anchored his 14 pound, 15 ounce day two
stringer with an 8 pound, 5 ounce bass, the heaviest of the day.

Bill Smith of Prestonburg, KY sits in third with 25 pounds, 12 ounces, but
he's looking over his shoulder at two-time BASS Masters Classic champion
George Cochran with 24-12, and Lynchburg, VA pro David Dudley, with 22-15.

Ironically, Yager's lead would have been greater had he not been penalized
a full pound for being a minute late to the weigh-in. With fishing
extremely difficult due to cold morning temperatures (44 degrees at
blast-off) and followed by a stiff 20 mile an hour north wind and bluebird
skies, a difference of a single pound is sure to make a big difference in
this event.

Even Eng, owner of a marine dealership in the city of Okeechobee, isn't
overly confident of his chances of catching Yager because of the
conditions. He admitted to fishing slightly deeper water (11 to 12 feet)
than most of his competitors, but with overnight temperatures predicted to
fall into the high 30's tonight, Eng knows bass will be even more sluggish
during the final round.

In third, Smith is actually pitching his lure into holes in the vegetation
and letting it lie motionless on the bottom for a minute or longer, if the
wind will let him. Cochran, likewise, emphasized the importance of a slow
presentation, and added that tomorrow's presentation may have to be even
slower.

Overall, the total catch on the second day reflected the effect of the
changing conditions and overall cold water temperature. Only 692 bass were weighed in by the 317 anglers, with a total weight of 1,261 pounds -- far below Okeechobee's normal springtime standards.

Kansan Laster in 148th with 3 fish
Randy Yager tops field on windy first day

OKEECHOBEE CITY, Fla., Jan. 20, 2000 - While 20 mile-an-hour winds battered Lake Okeechobee's prime shoreline grassbeds, New York angler Randy Yager and his partner Carl Maxfield ducked into a protected creek where they not only enjoyed calm water but also some of the best fishing this massive inland ocean has to offer.

Yager brought in five bass weighing 21-pounds, 4 ounces to take the first
round lead, while Maxfield added 9-6 and stands in 42nd place. They were
fishing Maxfield's water, however, so he definitely plans to return to the
same spot while Yager will have to try something different.

Charlie Youngers of nearby Oviedo, FL holds second after bringing in
18-pounds, 5-ounces -- ironically from the same area Yager plans to fish.
Two-time BASS Masters Classic winner George Cochran stands in third with 17-1, while Mike Surman of Boca Raton, FL holds fourth with 14-12. Scott Webster of Clinton, MI rounds out the top five with 14-8.

The high winds, which had been absent during practice, hurt those anglers
who had planned to sight-fish for bedding bass. Not only could the anglers
not see the fish, they couldn't hold their boats in one place long enough
to even work a spot thoroughly.

As a result, numerous fish-catching lures and presentations were used,
ranging from "dead-sticking" plastic worms around clumps of hydrilla to
slow-rolling spinnerbaits, flipping jigs, and even using small,
shallow-running crankbaits. With water temperatures still in the low 60's
(the water temperature has fallen 10 degrees in the past two weeks) and a
full moon occurring during the week, the bass are trying to move shallow
but are not actively hitting lures. Temperatures are predicted to fall
into the high 40's each night during the tournament but climb into the
mid-70's during the days.

"The keys are fishing slow but still trying to cover a lot of water," said
Yager, an insurance claims adjuster who has fished BASSMASTER Tournament Trail events off and on since 1986 but who sat out all of last year. "I know I was really fortunate today with the fish I caught, and I'm really not sure I can duplicate it again."

Daily weigh-ins will be held at Okee-tantie Marina at 2:30 p.m.

A free CastingKids event presented by Zebco and BIG Kmart will be held at 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. prior to the weigh-in on Saturday. This national
program was designed by B.A.S.S. CEO Helen Sevier to encourage children to learn the basics of casting, flipping and pitching.
