"Rufus did it!"
Newcomer wins fish-off by 1 pound

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. Dec 5, 1999 - "Rufus did it!" were the exact words of veteran angler Carl Maxfield of Summerville, North Carolina after seeing the two fish he caught during the sudden death fish-off blink 2.05 pounds on the digital scale. Newcomer Rufus Johnson of Strawplains, Tennessee had weighed in three bass totaling 3.10 pounds prior to Maxfield's bag to secure the BASSMASTER Eastern Invitational Championship win.

Johnson, who was in 48th place going into the final day of competition,
brought over 13 pounds to the scale on Saturday to tie Maxfield and force a
sudden death fish-off.

Obviously in shock at winning the second B.A.S.S. event he had ever
entered, Johnson gladly accepted a $16,000 check and the keys to his new
fully equipped Ranger boat sporting a Mercury outboard. When asked about the strategy he employed for the first fish-off B.A.S.S. has seen in four years Johnson said that "My main strategy was to catch a largemouth. I figured it would take more weight to win this thing than what the spotted
bass could give me. I pulled up to my first point this morning and caught
two spots ...bam ...bam." said Johnson. "I went a little farther down,"
continued the champion "and lost a largemouth between four and five
pounds...that rattled me for about thirty minutes, but I got my groove back
and started back to runnin' points."

Johnson said that he hit over thirty points in the small amount of time he
was on the water. A chartreuse Fat Free Guppy made by Excalibur was the
bait that won Johnson the tournament. "I'd throw that little crankbait up
against the bank and rip it back. They would usually hit it whenever the
point dropped off quite a bit." stated Johnson.

As Tournament director Dewey Hendricks awarded a $2,000 check and the keys to a new Ranger/Mercury rig to Maxfield, the disappointment was obvious. "I lost an ear off the prop of my engine this morning on my way to the water I wanted to fish. My boat was vibrating so badly it wouldn't get on plane so I crawled on down the lake ... I probably lost a good hour of
fishing." stated Maxfield. "I was able to borrow a boat and caught my two
fish soon after, but I only ended up with about 2 hours to fish...but
that's all part of this sport." continued North Carolina pro.

Maxfield stuck with the same pattern he had been using all week which was
to fish a spinnerbait over slender points that led to deep water.

Today's awards made the total payout of the Lake Martin Invitational
$213,000. Johnson added 300 points to his ongoing total that may land him a spot at the BASSMASTER Classic to be held next year in Chicago, IL. Maxfield received 299 points for his effort.

A Fish-Off Will Decide Invitational Champ

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. Dec 3, 1999 - The possibility of an angler in 45th place jumping into a first place tie by catching 13 pounds of fish on the final day of a BASSMASTER invitational sounds more like a movie script than reality. But that is exactly what happened at the Eastern Invitational held on Alabama's Lake Martin. Rufus Johnson of Strawplains, Tn. brought in the biggest sack of fish the tournament staff had weighed all weekend to equal the weight of Summerville, Sc. pro Carl Maxfield.

Maxfield brought in 9.09 pounds the final day to accumulate the shared
weight of 25.04 pounds. After the tie for first place had been confirmed,
weighmaster Dewey Hendricks explained to the anglers that in the event of a tie the winnings are combined and split between the competitors -- except
when the tie is for first place. "This means that you guys have to jump in
front of the stage and duke it out!" joked Hendricks. The two anglers did
have to roll up their sleeves and fight, but stingy Lake Martin was their
ring.

Johnson and Maxfield were sent back out at 3:45 p.m. and given until 4:30
p.m. to bring in a fish that would put them over the top. The fish-off
became a welcome piece of excitement in what has been a somewhat uneventful tournament. Both fishermen had been traveling over 30 minutes to get to their fishing areas of the past three days, so new water would be tested to decide the champion of the $213,000 event.

The last time a fish-off was necessary to decide a B.A.S.S. champion was
four years ago in a MegaBucks event held on Dallas Texas' White Rock lake.

As 4:30 rolled around, the fishermen arrived back at the dock empty handed. "What we are going to do," stated Hedricks "is send these guys off at 6:30 in the morning to decide the champion of this thing. The weigh-in will be held at the boat dock of Wind Creek State Park at 10:00 a.m.

Third place was captured by pro Paul Hanley of Hull, Ga. Hanley was also
awarded a new Ranger/Mercury rig for his three day total of 23.05 pounds.
"It was a tough three days of fishing. I'm very thankful for the fish I
was able to get." said Hanley.

Big bass of the final day was caught by pro Tim Horton of Spruce Pine, Al.
The 5.02 pound largemouth came from 15-17 feet of water around 8:30a.m.
The bigmouth fell for a 3/4 ounce Fat Free Shad that was ticking the top of
a rock pile off a main lake point. Horton was awarded $1000 for his catch.

The CastingKids competition held prior to the weigh-in was won by Kevin
Aaron of Plantersville, Al. for the 7-10 age group and Daniel Curvin of
Jacksonville, Ga. for the 11-14 age group. These two future BASSMASTERS qualified for the State CastingKids competition to be held February 26th at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery, Al.

Changing patterns proved invaluable for the Georgia pro

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. Dec 3, 1999 - The anglers fishing the BASSMASTER Eastern Invitational on Lake Martin spent the second day of competition marveling at what wonderful conditions they were witnessing -- for a picnic! As for fishing, the topaz skies and lack of wind did little to
impress the competitors as the fishing continued to be tough.

First day leader George Cochran of Arkansas arrived in the first flight
with only one keeper leaving the door wide open for the rest of the field.
The biggest stride through that door was pro Tom Hamlin of Macon, Ga.
Hamlin added 8.05 pounds of greenback to his first day creel of 9.13 to
take the day two top spot with a total of 18.06 pounds. When asked about
his prediction for another good sack tomorrow Hamlin replied "No way!
Those fish are everywhere. Yesterday I caught all of my fish with a
jiggin' spoon in 30-60 feet of water and today they weren't there! I
switched to Carolina riggin' points and side pockets to get the fish I
brought in today. I don't know where to look tomorrow!"

Making a move to the second place spot was pro Paul Hanley of Hull, Ga.
Hanley was in 6th place yesterday and added 9.04 pounds to his total for
17.06 pounds. Hanley caught all his fish in 50-55 feet of water with a
silver 3/4 ounce jigging spoon. "Yesterday I caught five limits," said
Hanley, "but today I only got five bites!" when asked about comparing the
first day of fishing to the second. He echoed Hamlin's predictions for
tomorrow by telling the crowd "...there's no telling how I'll do tomorrow."

Third place is Jim Bitter of Fruitland Park, Fl. with 16.07 pounds
followed by Chris Elliot of Raleigh, NC. with 15.15 pounds and Summerville, SC. pro Carl Maxfield followed in fifth with 15.11 pounds.

Big bass of the day and a $1000 check was awarded to James Nuckols of
Prestonsburg, Ky. for his impressive 7.08 pound hawg.

The final weigh-in on Saturday begins at 2 p.m. at Wind Creek State Park
and is free to the public.

Also on Saturday, area youngsters will compete in the popular BASSMASTER CastingKids free contest, which will be held at the Wind Creek State Park from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the weigh-in site. This national program was designed by B.A.S.S. CEO Helen Sevier to encourage children to learn the basics of casting, flipping and pitching.

at Lake Martin

Two-time Classic champ overcomes tough fishing conditions

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. Dec 2, 1999 - Two-time BASS Masters Classic champion George Cochran figures the best way to win the $213,000 BASSMASTER Eastern Invitational here on Lake Martin is to ignore the abundant spotted bass population and target largemouth.

That strategy paid off Thursday as the Arkansas veteran carried 12 pounds,
2 ounces to the scales on a very tough day of fishing and took the first
round lead.

Jimmy Millsaps of Canton, Ga. is second with 10 pounds, 9 ounces and Carl Maxfield of Summerville, S.C. is third with 10 pounds. Tom Hamlin Jr. of Macon, Ga. is fourth with 9-13 and Ronnie Ray of Phenix City, Ala. fifth with 9-10.

Only three of the 330 anglers came in with more than 10 pound catches, as
bluebird skies and no wind seemed to prevent the bigger fish from biting.
There were 82 limits caught, but most of those consisted of small spotted
bass.

Thursday's tough fishing conditions were what Cochran expected and why he chose to fish for largemouth. He had a few spotted bass in his sack, but
largemouth dominated, including a 6 pound, 3 ounce largemouth.

"I know there are a lot more spotted bass in this lake than there are
largemouth, but I also know the largemouth will weigh more" said Cochran,
who has six regular season wins. "To win, a guy is going to need at least a
couple good largemouth in his sack."

Spotted bass prefer the rocky shorelines and clay points of Lake Martin,
while the largemouth are in the pockets and coves, he said. That's where
Cochran is fishing a chartreuse or shad colored Strike King Series One
crankbait.

"I'm fishing isolated cover in about five feet of water and making multiple
casts to each target," said Cochran. "I made a half dozen casts to the spot
where I caught the six pounder before he hit."

While the other contestants are hoping for cloud cover and wind to get the
fish to bite better, Cochran hopes it stays the same.

"I feel confident with what I'm doing and the conditions are really hurting
the guys fishing for spotted bass," he explained. "But those bigger
spotted bass could really turn on if it gets cloudy or the wind starts to
blow."

The 32-year-old BASSMASTER Tournament Trail is the oldest and most
prestigious bass fishing tournament circuit in the country. It has set the
standard for credibility, professionalism and sportsmanship for more than
three decades.
