Tyner wins Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League
Okie Division Tournament
Grove, Okla., (April 15, 2002) Mike Tyner of Stillwater,
Okla., topped 191
Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League competitors Saturday on Grand Lake
with five
bass weighing 19 pounds, 14 ounces. The catch earned him $4,848
and 200
points in the Boater Division.
Tyner, who also earned a $1,000 bonus from Ranger Boats as
the highest
finishing participant in the Ranger Cup incentive program, caught
his limit
on a white spinner bait with gold blades while fishing rock banks
in 2 to 4
feet of water. The catch topped second-place boater Terry Butcher
of Talala,
Okla., by 2 pounds, 11 ounces. Butcher finished the one-day tournament
with
a five-bass catch weighing 17 pounds, 3 ounces worth $2,424.
Chester Gibbs of Wagoner, Okla. (five bass, 16 pounds, 11
ounces, $1,454);
Lee Sanders of Stillwater, Okla. (four bass, 13 pounds, $1,164);
and Kirk
Washburn of Harrah, Okla., (five bass, 12 pounds, 15 ounces,
$1,067) rounded
out the top five boaters.
Kirk Smith of Edmond, Okla., earned boater big bass honors
and $955 with a
6-pound, 8-ounce bass that he caught on a black and blue jig
while fishing a
rock bank in 2 to 4 feet of water. He finished in 29th place
overall with
two bass weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces.
Ron Grider of Edmond, Okla., claimed first place and $2,411
in the
191-competitor Co-angler Division with five bass weighing 14
pounds, 5
ounces. He surpassed second-place co-angler Eric Kromhout of
Locust Grove,
Okla., by 2 pounds, 8 ounces. Kromhout finished with a five-bass
catch
weighing 11 pounds, 13 ounces worth $1,206.
Bradley Morrison of Rudy, Ark. (five bass, 11 pounds, 5 ounces,
$723);
Clifford Blalock of Choctaw, Okla. (three bass, 9 pounds, 10
ounces, $579);
and Trenton Whitehouse of Bristow, Okla., (four bass, 9 pounds,
8 ounces,
$530) rounded out the top five co-anglers.
Co-angler Robbie Black of Francis, Okla., earned big bass
honors and $475 in
his division with a 5-pound, 7-ounce bass. He finished 18th thanks
to the
one bass.
Overall, 12 five-bass limits were caught during the tournament.
The Wal-Mart BFL will visit Lake Eufaula May 11 for the third
of five Okie
Division events. The boater with the most points after the division,s
season
finale, a two-day Super Tournament Sept. 7-8 on Keystone Lake,
will be
declared the Yamaha "Be the Best Points Leader and awarded
$1,000. The
co-angler amassing the most points by the end of the season will
receive
$500.
The top 30 Okie Division boaters and co-anglers will advance
to regional
competition Oct. 29-Nov. 2 on Lake Hamilton near Hot Springs,
Ark., where
they will go up against top competitors from the Louisiana, Ozark
and Gulf
Coast divisions for a shot at qualifying for the Wal-Mart BFL
All-American "
one of the most lucrative post-season tournaments in competitive
angling.
2002 BFL awards could reach $7 million based on full fields.

$7 Million Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League
to Visit Grand Lake
Grove, Okla. (April 8, 2002) " The $7 million
Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League
for weekend anglers will visit Grand Lake April 13 for the second
of five
Okie Division events.
Up to 400 of the region,s best anglers will be vying for top
awards of up to
$5,000 cash in the Boater Division and up to $2,500 cash in the
Co-angler
Division at the tournament weigh-in, which will be held at Red
11 Port
beginning at 3 p.m.
Lake Eufaula will host the Okie Division,s third tournament
May 11. The
division,s fourth tournament will be held June 15 on Grand Lake
followed by
the Okie Super Tournament Sept. 7-8 on Keystone Lake.
Following the end of regular season competition, the top 30
Okie Division
boaters and co-anglers will advance to regional competition on
Lake Hamilton
near Hot Springs, Ark., Oct. 29-Nov. 2, where they will go up
against top
competitors from the Louisiana, Ozark and Gulf Coast Divisions.
Boaters will
compete for a new Chevy truck and a Ranger boat powered by Evinrude
or
Yamaha, while co-anglers fish for a new Ranger boat powered by
Evinrude or
Yamaha. Anglers who enter all five regular season Okie Division
tournaments
but do not advance to the regional can fish the Chevy Trucks
Wild Card
Regional Nov. 5-9 for a shot at the 2003 Wal-Mart BFL All-American
championship. With $100,000 cash going to the winning boater
and $50,000
cash going to the winning co-angler, the All-American ranks as
one of the
most lucrative championship tournaments in competitive angling.
Six boaters and six co-anglers from each of the BFL,s six
regional
tournaments will advance to the All-American along with six boaters
and six
co-anglers from the Chevy Wild Card. Three boaters and three
co-anglers from
the Western Regional will also advance to the All-American, boosting
the
total field to 45 boaters and 45 co-anglers.
The 2002 All-American on Cross Lake near Shreveport, La.,
June 5-8 will be
televised live on PAX TV as part of the FLW Outdoors television
series
airing Saturdays at 3 p.m. EST.
Nationwide, the BFL is divided into 26 divisions " each
featuring four
one-day qualifying tournaments and a two-day Super Tournament.
Each Super
Tournament will award up to $9,600 to the winning boater and
up to $4,800 to
the winning co-angler.
Under the BFL,s boater and co-angler format, boaters supply
the boats, fish
from the front deck, and control boat movement throughout the
competition.
Co-anglers fish from the back deck and are competing against
other
co-anglers. Two hundred points are awarded to tournament winners,
199 points
are presented for second and so on. These points determine angler
standings
throughout the season. Every angler who receives weight credit
earns points.
Awards for the 2002 BFL season could reach $7 million based
on full fields
at each tournament. Additionally, Ranger Cup participants are
eligible to
win a $500 to $1,000 bonus at each BFL tournament. Anglers using
a
fixed-mount Garmin Fishfinder or GPS/Sounder are also eligible
to win a
$1,000 bonus at each BFL tournament as part of the Garmin Grand
Giveaway.
As the nation,s leading provider of affordable, close-to-home
weekend
tournaments, the BFL is widely credited with opening competitive
bass
fishing to the masses. It also serves as a stepping-stone for
anglers who
wish to advance to the EverStart Series and ultimately the Wal-Mart
FLW
Tour " bass fishing,s most lucrative tournament series.
Each year the top 30
BFL boaters and co-angler from each division are eligible to
advance to the
EverStart Series. All-American champions are eligible for Wal-Mart
FLW Tour
competition. The top 10 pros and co-anglers from each of the
EverStart
Series, three divisions are eligible to advance to the Wal-Mart
FLW Tour.
Former BFL anglers who have become fishing superstars on the
Wal-Mart FLW
Tour include Kellogg,s pro Clark Wendlandt, Chevy pro Tommy Biffle
and four
time FLW Tour champion David Fritts.
