Cheek performs a rare Hat Trick
on WBFA bass tour
July 2, 2001 - Humid conditions, which drove heat
indexes above the 100-degree mark, and swarms of knats that hovered
and covered, did not deter the WBFA anglers from catching lots
of bass. Janice Cheek, of Lecompte, La maintained her hot
streak and won her third Women's Bass Fishing Association Tour
event in a
row, on beautiful Lake Eufaula in Eufaula, AL. Cheek, who
was in second
place after the first day of competition, continued fishing the
ledges, creek
channels and main lake drop-offs to finish with 26.23 pounds
and overtook
leader Darcie Cook, of Scottsboro, AL. Cook took first
day big bass award
money with a fish weighing 6.26 pounds, and finished in third
place for the
two-day event with 23.49 pounds of bass.
Second place was captured by past World Champion, Emily Shaffer
of Smyrna,
TN, who had a two-day total of 24.05 pounds. Shaffer won
a National Title at
the Harvest Moon event last fall on Pickwick Lake.
Jan Hudson from Harrison, AR finished fourth, followed by
Kimberlee Chambers
of Cullman, AL. Chambers won the second-day big bass award,
worth well over
$700, with a Hawg weighing 7.91 pounds.
Debra Petrowski from Arlington, TX won the non-boater division
with a total
weight of 14.36 pounds. Jovita Smith took second
place honors, while Linda
Owens of Brandon, MS finished third, followed by Karen Branch
from Leesburg,
GA in fourth and San Antonio's Janet Frerich in fifth.
Jovita Smith took
first day big-bass money of well over $400 with a bass weighing
3.65 pounds
and Pam Gray from Killen, AL took second day's with a bass of
3.86 pounds.
This tournament ended the 2001 tour season for the WBFA Tour.
