Konawa Lake number one Oklahoma Lake - eight years running

Go Fishing in Grand Lake Oklahoma and Rent a Grand Lake Vacation Home

November 26, 2006 - Keystone - Submitted by Tiny's Keystone Lake Catfish Guide Service - We had a great trip today, Keith came up from Sapulpa and Ted and Paul came from Coweta. The fishing was about the same as the other day but we used a little different rig. I thunk and thunk on how to increase the hookup rate after we'd missed so many fish on the last two outings because we'd missed well over half our hits on one trip and almost that on the next so I came up with the same rig except using an embroidery needle to thread a leader up through the cut shad and used a treble hook ... it was a pain in the butt to bait up each time but it paid off in a big way as we had only a very few missed fish on the treble hooks where the kahle hooks missed more times than they hooked um today. We had a few kahle hooks and eventually switched those out all except for one rig and the hookup rate went up dramatically. Paul had several misses in a row on the 5/0 Kahle hooks. What I did was tied a 4/0 treble hook onto a one foot leader on most of them and then tied a loop in the upper end and had a snap swivel tied on the mainline with a dropper loop. then to bait this rig up I'd have to unsnap the hook leader and then put the loop through the eye of the embroidery needle then push the needle up through the cut shad or shad head and out the other end then pull the leader through the bait and let it drop down to the treble hook and then stick one of the treble hooks into the meat and the other two sticking out on both sides of the bait ... it was a deadly rig. we missed maybe only 5 fish or so on the trebles if that many.

35 fish total with the biggest at 17 lbs 7 oz

November 11, 2006 - Keystone - Submitted by Tiny's Keystone Lake Catfish Guide Service - Fished with Sonny and Harlan today. It was a tough day but we squeaked one out with 11 or 12 total fish. The biggest was a 10 lbs 11oz with a couple around 8 lbs. It was a really nice day and the wind kept building stronger and stronger but it was tolerable. The picture below has Harlan on the left side of the picture and Sonny on the other side. We caught two just right off the bat and then a couple more and then a long dry spell until we went back to the original pattern after trying some deeper water. It seemed like everything was still scattered from the last front so we pulled back to a pattern that matched what we were on when we caught the first four and started doing alright then. It was hard to locate fish anywhere else. Water temp was a big range today ... we fished in some water that was 67 degrees but in the main part of the lake it was running right at 58. Shad were everywhere and really thick between osage point and cowskin bay. We found bigger shad over by waresha creek. It was a really fun trip but we had to work for all we got.

November 4, 2006 - Keystone - Submitted by Tiny's Keystone Lake Catfish Guide Service - Water temp 55. Large bait was hard to find but we found a few 5" shad over on the south side of the lake.

We had a pretty good day today. The conditions were very extreme today with high winds shooting right up the gut and beating us pretty good ... it limited us towards the end of the day as to where we could fish ... the anchor quit holding so we eventually gave it up. This is Gale from Tinker AFB ... his friends chickened out on him or something as he was all by his lonesome today ... I allowed as how I'd be his buddy today ... it was great fun and we did a lot of visiting on fish location methods and what not. The biggest fish of the day to start out with was 8 lbs+ and Gale allowed as how that was his personal best for this year as he hadn't been able to get out and go fishing much this year. Then the next Personal best was a dandy at 16 lbs and 4 oz. We had another biggun on but it came unbuttoned and a few others came unglued but it was just one of them thangs ... they do that sometimes.

November 3, 2006 - Keystone - Submitted by Tiny's Keystone Lake Catfish Guide Service - The front that came through last Friday still had everything messed up out there but we did alright. Otis and Bill from Stillwater went fishing with me today and we caught around 10 or 11 with the biggest being around 10 lbs and we even caught a pretty nice striper. The day was pretty miserable because of all the wind and cold. A very blustery day with water temps around 55 to 58 degrees air temp was a high of about 55 or so. We used fresh cut shad for bait. The fishing was pretty tough with the fish really scattered out. It would have been a little too rough fishing where I normally fish with the high winds so we ended up fishing a different area all together.

Bill with a nice blue.

October 28, 2006 - Keystone - Submitted by Tiny's Keystone Lake Catfish Guide Service - We had a dual front move through yesterday with a dry line coming in from the west then a strong northern front slamming down on us and I knew the fish were going to be scattered so we had a head start on them when we started today at about 9am. The fronts kept us from catching a lot but we still yet caught 15 total for the day and it was tough going ... we'd get bit about 3 to 4 times then have to move and get a few more hits. We missed a few good hits but landed most with one biggun coming unbuttoned that looked to be between 15 and 20 lbs. biggest fish was 6 lbs 6 oz with a total weight of around 70 lbs and made about 4 gallon bags of fillets. The weren't filled all the way up but it was a nice mess of fish for these two U.S. Navy Men, Stephen on the left of the photo and Rusty on the right. They drove down from Tinker AFB.

Water temp 56 to 58 today with no wind to start off with but about half way through the day we started getting some pretty good westerly wind. Fresh cut shad was the bait.

October 24, 2006 - Keystone - Submitted by Tiny's Keystone Lake Catfish Guide Service - Went with Roy and Donald Richardson today. We searched all over the place for fish and the front that hit Saturday pushed them way back into deep water. We caught nothing but channels where we fished Saturday. We got started fishing about 11 am and ended the day around 5:30pm with a total of somewhere around 30 fish at about 170+ lbs of fish. The fish pulled way back into deep water and when we found them we found a bunch of them. Caught several doubles and Donald couldn't hardly keep up there for a little bit. Tiny even had to reel in a few. Water temp 53 degrees, Bait was fresh cut shad. Bottom float rig used with 4/0 Kahle and 8/0 Gamakatsu circle hooks. The fish were biting really aggressively and they seemed to be stationary over large schools of shad. The wind started picking up pretty good around 5:15 so we decided to head in. Average wind speed most of the day was about 10mph out of the south southeast.

This was the biggest fish of the day at 10 lbs 8 oz's

October 21, 2006 - Keystone - Submitted by Tiny's Keystone Lake Catfish Guide Service -From left to right, Brandon, Debbie and Ron. 15 fish total - Fish caught on fresh cut shad from live shad. Water temp 56 to 57 degrees. Wind 5 to 10 from several direction. Bottom float rig used on all poles. All fish caught in less than 5 ft of water. Biggest fish was a 15.1 lb blue caught by Debbie and the next biggest was an 11.14 caught by Ron and then several 8's with a total of 15 fish. Only fished about 3.5 hours before the front blasted in on use but all the fish were caught in the last hour of fishing except for two we caught early on. It took a while to establish a pattern today as we've had two fronts move in since I was out monday and it took a little while to locate the fish but once we did we kicked butt. It was constant FISH-ON!!! that last hour. I'd barely get sat down after tending a pole when we'd get another one on. then another and we had a few doubles and even one triple but the last one of the three was a small one ... we just got an 8 out of the net when we had the 11.14 coming in and then the smaller one. This was a birthday present trip for Ron that his wife Debbie got for him. Hope you had a happy birthday Ron ... I know I enjoyed your birthday!

October 19, 2006 - Keystone - Submitted by Tiny's Keystone Lake Catfish Guide Service -Keystone Lake bluecat catfishing report for October.

Water temp average 70 degrees.

Bait that all fish were caught on was fresh cut shad about 5inches long preferred heads

Wind out of the southeast on most days

Fish holding over shad about 10 per square yard if they were thicker than that there weren't any fish there. Thinner shad would be no fish either.

Rig used was a bottom float rig which is a sinker on bottom with a 4/0 kahle tied on via a dropper loop about 3 ft above the sinker and a crappie float above the hook on the mainline. About 3 yds of slack in the line so that the crappie float will hold the bait off bottom. Over 200 fish caught using this setup in about 7 trips. A three day total in September we caught over 700 lbs of fish on rod and reel on the 22nd 23rd and 25th. The fishing should get even better with these cooler temps coming in near this third week of October. Good Fishing

September 16, 2006 - Answer to Florida Bass question - Hello. I read your question about how to catch those bass you are seeing. I am a florida native and have been fishing central florida for over 30 years and i can tell you that if you put a live golden shiner in front of those fish you will indeed connect with them. If you need more information on how to fish with this kind of bait let me know and i will send to you a link to all the info you need. I have a few places where i catch my own golden shiners and keep them in a tank to use when i want to go fishing. This is another complete subject i know but once you start catching bass with shiners you won't want to stop. If you buy them they run from $16.00 to $20.00 a dozen, this is to much for me to pay so i catch my own. Catching the bait is almost as much fun as catching the bass! Jeff Morrow, Sarasota, Fla

May 26, 2006 - Skiatook - Submitted by Watkins Guide Service - Last few weeks on Skiatook has been terrific fishing. Most of the fish has ranged in the 3-5lb class with a few in the 6-9lb class. The fish have been in the summer patterns for the last 2 months. The shallow spring bite never happened all fish are being caught in 20-40ft water on the bottom. We have been catching 25-60 hybrids per trip. This picture is of a 8.9lb hybrid caught May 25th by Dale Gardners group.

May 22, 2006 - Answer to Florida Bass question - You might try some garlic sent found at most tackle shops.  It covers a lot of smells and bass seem to like it.

May 2, 2006 - Birch Lake - Barnsdall, OK - Lake level was back up this week end after about 6 inches of rain. Four of us caught over 60 cats ranging from 2 1/2 pounds up to about 7 pounds. Crappie real slow, sand bass real slow.

April 30, 2006 - Texoma - Submitted by Southern Oklahoma Guides - Long-lining season in March and early April was just short of spectacular with numerous fish from 10 to 18 lbs. pulled. Fishing with live shad has been the method of preference since then, and, success in regards to numbers and quality seems to be improving daily. We are catching fish in various depths of water (10-50 feet) so it is difficult for me to suggest a preferred depth. Drifting and anchoring seem to be working equally well depending on the day. Heavy rains the past few days have put a lot of debris in the water. If you are planning a trip in the nest few days, be very careful. Submitted by Doc Walker, 877-664-2208.

April 24, 2006 - Eufaula - Submitted by Outdoor Adventure Guide Service - This week with warm days and warm nights Crappie action on Lake Eufaula is really heating up. Over the next two weeks Its going to be prime time to load your boat with Crappie. Most fish on the north end of the lake are now in less than a foot of water, With excellent reports coming in from bank fisherman and boater's a like. On the south end were the water is clear Crappie are reported in 4 to 6 foot of water off rocks and river channel's. Featured In this report is Angella McLaughlin with her limit of Crappie, Angella was using ultra light fishing tackle with blue and white jig's producing some great action. Larry

April 19, 2006 - Eufaula - Submitted by Outdoor Adventure Guide Service - Photo - Angella McLaughlin of Oklahoma city landed a 72 pound spoonbill Easter Sunday and is now Outdoor Adventures fishing person of the week. Oklahoma fishing has been great over the last few weeks, With good numbers of White Bass & Crappie, being caught in the lake. Crappie are on the banks in 2 ft of water , Black and pink and green and black jigs will put lots of fish in the boat. Stripers are hitting live shad in the rivers with some days producing fish up to 25 lbs, With spring in full swing all the fish are running up the rivers to spawn, This week we have been fishing in the grand river at Spoony point snagging spoonbill, This is a great place to land a Hugh spoonbill, Until next time your Outdoor Aventure Guide, Larry

March 20, 2006 - Answer to Florida Bass question -
I've fished for Florida strain bass in Texas lakes most of my life, and have found that when the big girls are on the nests, down sizing to a small 4in lizard with an 1/8 oz. weight is hard to beat. Watermelon seed or watermelon with red flake is dynamite on east Texas lakes, especially Fork (cotton candy if the water is unusually clear). Pitch the lizard in there and just leave it. This takes an extreme amount of patience, but the subtle movements created by the water look most natural and will eventually drive them nuts. And remember, if you can see them they'll likely see you first. So if the fish are leaving the nest when you make your presentation, mark the spot, leave, and come back. Sneak up with a push pole and stay off the trolling motor. Stay far enough away not to spook the fish (tie up if necessary but don't use the trolling motor); then, make your presentation. If the water is stained to murky, and your casting for spawning bass instead of site fishing, a 6in lizard with gold flake in it can be good. Zoom's mossy pumpkin color will get you tore up on Fork. If you're not having any luck getting the bedding bass to bite, leave 'em alone. Move out to 8ft deep in the mouths of spawning coves or secondary points up the creeks. Tie on a Gene Larew Hawg Craw (the big one) in black w/ blue claws, fish the trees, and hold on to your rod. Shorter trees with some broken-off limbs (laydowns) or horizontal limbs just beneath the surface in 8ft of water are best. This pattern put a 13.86 in the boat for my partner one early spring. One last comment- please do not use shiners or other live bait for bass, especially for trophy bass in the spring, as fish mortality is higher with live bait rigs. Best of luck.

March 16, 2006 - Answer to Florida Bass question - My answer will stay simple since each body of water is different as well as each day and down to each hour fishing can be different, but there is one method of fishing that can offer up excellent bass fishing

The secret is to simply fish at night. You only need to try a few lures to make night fishing a success. One is the buzzbait, the next will be a single big cupped bladed spinnerbait, and then you can stick with a big black juicy worm. And night fishing can be done at the shore. Only thing is it will be dark, but fishing can be very successful. Bass move to the shallows to eat, there are very few if any other fisherman out on the water as well.

Just scope out a good spot that has plenty of weeds or other cover and fish there. If you don't get a fish in ten minutes then move on. But once you get a good spot you can catch fish after fish.

Good luck.

March 14, 2006 - Skiatook - Submitted by Watkins Guide Service - Skiatook is picking up on the Hybrids. Water temp is in the low 50's and the fish have begun to move in shallow. Saturday and Sunday we caught over 40 Hybrids and well over a 100 sandies. We are at the beginning of some great fishing to look forward to here in north east Oklahoma. Many 10lb fish will be caught over the next few months. See you on the water

Shawn Watkins

March 14, 2006 - Answer to Florida Bass question - If you are primarily sight fishing in clear water you need to be able to make repeated 100% accurate casts. When I sight fish i like to be able to cast to where the bass can't see the lure comming until it comes in front of the fishes face getting a reaction strike. you will have to experiment to know what to use whether it be crankbait, worm, jig. From my experience, i can usually find a jig that will work in any condition. you just have to modify weight and trailer size for balance and drop speed.

March 10, 2006 - Answer to Florida Bass question - try to use a big shiner on lite line and a bobber if you are in thick vegitation use fire line 15-25 lbs test also try plastics with a lot of salt jiging for them if they are agressive and not much vegitation try a rattlie trap

March 8, 2006 - Answer to Florida Bass question - what about water clarity? If it is very clear maybe they are getting to good of a look at your bait. if this is the case i would probably use a mostly clear bait and fish a little faster possibly getting more reaction strikes.

March 6, 2006 - Kaw - Mike Cook - Four Lake Guides - It was a tough day for slabs to start with at Kaw lake last Sunday. Michael Hood joined me for a day of vertical jig fishing deep water brushpiles for the speckle bellies. When we broke for lunch we had 4 or 5 keepers. Same story in the afternoon. It was tough trying to make a decent presentation in the high winds even being anchored. Finally a couple of hours before sundown I changed the presentation from anchored to approaching the brushpile with the trolling motor. Bam. Big slab. We couldn't put them in the boat fast enough. Fish from 4 inches to about 12. We caught fish until we had just enough time to get the boat loaded and on the road before it got dark. Water temp was 45 degrees. Can't wait to get back.

March 5, 2006 - Texoma - Submitted by Southern Oklahoma Guides - March is one of my favorite months. The numbers may not be as impressive as in warmer months, but, the quality is probably the best of the year. Ten pound plus fish are more common than any time of the year. We are targeting pre-spawn fish that are staging on 18-25 ft. ledges adjacent to creek or river channels. Long-lining with deep diving thundersticks and redfins produce fish as well as live shad and various jig combinations. We usually drag our lures 150-200 ft. behind the boat.

February 27, 2006 - Kaw - Mike Cook - Four Lake Guides - Fishing February 25th at Kaw. Spent the morning fishing for crappie because the wind was up to high for me to fish for the big bad blues where I wanted to fish for them. Did pretty good. I caught 25 crappie and 6 or 8 big white bass. Kept a dozen of the bigger crappie for the tabble and a couple of the smaller ones for bait for the blues which I started fishing for them about 2 o'clock. Caught and released a half dozen of them between 3 and 15 pounds. All in all a fun trip although I should a fished longer for the blues.
Mike Cook

February 26, 2006 - Question from Florida on catching bass - Can you help my brothers and I catch bass? Heres the problem, we see a lot of bass here in central Florida, but they just wont bite our bait! They just sniff it and swim away, and our hands dont have anything like oil or anything that will repel the bass! Can you please help us by giving us some tips and telling us what tackle to use on bass? Thank You so much. Send us and answer and we will post it.
