Texan pockets $150,000 in Wal-Mart open
BENTONVILLE, Ark., (April 24, 1999) - Clark Wendlandt of Cedar Park, Texas, pocketed $150,000 by winning the Wal-Mart Open, the fourth stop on the 1999 Wal-Mart FLW Tour bass fishing series held on Beaver Lake. The tournament, which features the world's top professional bass anglers competing for a share of a $641,000 purse, is the richest bass tournament in Arkansas history. The seven-event tour is the most lucrative in history, featuring $4 million in cash prizes.

Wendlandt, fishing from the EverStart boat in the final round, survived two earlier rounds of competition and 165 other anglers enroute to the Wal-Mart FLW Tour victory. He landed a five bass limit, weighing 13 pounds, 12 ounces in the final round of competition to outdistance the four other anglers competing in the final round of the professional division to clinch the title.

"I've been so close to winning a big event so many times before; this is the best one to win," said Wendlandt.Wendlant won the tournament using a Gambler II, 4 inch tube jig, designed by Guido Hibdon, who fell just short of the win.

Fishing from the US Bank-VISA boat, Bernie Schultz of Gainesville, Florida, took
second place with a championship round, five bass catch weighing 12 pounds, 15 ounces, good for $50,000. Rounding out the top five in the Wal-Mart FLW Tour's professional division were: (3) Guido Hibdon of Gravois Mills, MO, (Coleman boat), five bass, 12-14, $30,000; (4) Carl Svebek III of Sam Rayburn, TX, (Land O' Lakes boat),five bass, 10-10, $25,000; and (5) Rob Kilby of Hot Springs, AR, (CITGO boat).

The win gives Wendlandt an automatic berth in the year-end Wal-Mart FLW Tour
Championship, presented by CITGO, September 22-25, 1999, in Wagoner, Oklahoma, where the winner will receive $250,000, the largest first place cash prize in sport fishing.

David Walker of Cannon, Kentucky, continues to lead in the Land O' Lakes
Angler-of-the-Year points race after four events with 245 points. Points are awarded to anglers after the first two days of FLW Tour competition based on ranking at that time. Bernie Schultz of Gainesville, Florida, is in second place with 209 points, while Alton Jones of Waco, Texas, is following in third place with 196 points. The Land O' Lakes Angler-of-the-Year will be featured on a special edition box of Wheaties later in the year.

The highest-finishing Ranger boat owner, from each division, in the tournament qualify to enter the $3.5 million Ranger M1 Millennium tournament, the richest bass event in history, with a $1 million first-place cash prize at stake. The Ranger owner who catches the largest bass in each division over the course of the season will also qualify for the Ranger Millennium tournament.

Chris Rand of Davie, Florida, continued his mastery over Beaver Lake by capturing his second win in the co-angler division in as many years. Rand dominated the competition, which concluded Friday, with a 5 bass catch totaling 8 pounds, 1 ounce to collect the $20,000 first place check.

Carl Maxfield of Summerville, South Carolina, landed a 6 pound, 5 ounce bass to earn big bass honors for the event. He received $1,000 from Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola will award $5,000 to the angler landing the biggest bass during the 1999 tour. Jim Moynagh of Carver, Minnesota is currently leading the year-long contest with a 10 pound, 4 ounce bass.

The fourth year Wal-Mart FLW Tour is the most lucrative bass fishing series in the history of the sport. Highlights of the 1999 tour include: four $471,500 qualifying tournaments, each with a $100,000 first prize; the $641,000 Wal-Mart Open featuring a $150,000 first place prize; and competitive angling's richest tournament, the $1 million Forrest Wood Open, June 23-26, in Detroit, Michigan.

The Wal-Mart FLW Tour is televised on ESPN and ESPN 2. The Wal-Mart Open tournament is scheduled to air on ESPN, May 8, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. EDT.

All tournaments operated by Operation Bass are catch and release events. Uniroyal will donate $25,000 to the Children's Miracle Network at the end of the season if the Wal-Mart FLW Tour maintains a 98 percent live release rate. After four events, the Wal-Mart FLW Tour's live release rate is over 99 percent.

Five pro anglers move to final round in $641,000 Wal-Mart FLW Tour Bass competition
BENTONVILLE, Ark., (April 23, 1999)
- After three days of competition, five professional anglers have advanced to the final round of professional fishing action in the Wal-Mart FLW Tour's Wal-Mart Open bass tournament being held on Beaver Lake. The event features a $641,000 purse and one of sport fishing's largest first place cash prizes - $150,000. The tournament will culminate Saturday at the Bentonville Wal-Mart Supercenter with weigh-in activities beginning at
11:30 a.m.

The five anglers making the final cut include: (1) Guido Hibdon, Gravois Mills, MO, 12 pounds, 15 ounces; (2) Carl Svebek III, Sam Rayburn, TX, 11 pounds, 10 ounces; (3) Rob Kilby, Hot Springs, AR, 10 pounds, 9 ounces; (4) Bernie Schultz, Gainesville, FL, 9 pounds, 6 ounces; and Clark Wendlandt, Cedar Park, TX, 9 pounds, 2 ounces.

In Saturday's final round, the five professional anglers will fish from the new Ranger Comanche fishing machines, and each competitor will be paired with a camera crew from ESPN. The angler/boat designations are as follows: Guido Hibdon/Coleman, Carl Svebek/Land O'Lakes, Rob Kilby/CITGO, Bernie Schultz/US Bank-VISA, and Clark Wendlandt/EverStart. The angler catching the heaviest limit of bass for the day will be the Wal-Mart FLW Tour Pro Division winner and receive $150,000. Second place will pay $50,000; third place $30,000; fourth place $25,000; and fifth place $20,000.

Rounding out the professional field were: (6) Curt Lytle, Suffolk, VA, 8-15/ Coleman boat; (7) Randy Howell, Trussville, AL, 8-9/ Timex; (8) Chris Baumgardner, Gastonia, NC, 8-0/ EverStart; (9) Johnny Mccombs, Morris, AL,7-11/ US Bank-VISA; (10) Cody Bird, Granbury, TX, 4-13/ Black & Decker.

In other fishing action, the co-angler competition has ended with Chris Rand of Davie, Florida, repeating as champion, winning first place with a catch of 8 pounds, 1 ounce. He received $20,000 for the win.. Rand caught his fish on a Carolina Rig.

Field cut in Wal-Mart FLW Tour Bass

- Ten anglers have made the first round cut to advance to Friday's second round of professional fishing action in the Wal-Mart Open, the $641,000 Wal-Mart FLW Tour tournament being held on Beaver Lake. The world's best bass anglers are competing for a first place cash prize of $150,000 in the fourth of seven events on the tour that in 1999 will award anglers $4 million.

The 10 world class anglers, together with the remaining 10 co-anglers, will compete Friday, for one day, with the top five professionals, based on Friday's catch weight, advancing to Saturday's final round. In addition to the $150,000 first place cash, the winning professional and co-angler receive berths in the Wal-Mart FLW Tour Championship, presented by CITGO, September 22-25, 1999, on Ft. Gibson Lake in Wagoner, Oklahoma, where the winning professional will receive the largest cash award in fishing - $250,000.

Virginia angler takes first round lead in $641,000 Wal-Mart FLW Tour Bass Event
BENTONVILLE, Ark. (April 21, 1999)
- Curt Lytle of Suffolk, Virginia, landed five bass weighing 19 pounds, to lead the 165-man professional division after the first round of competition in the fourth event of the $4 million, 1999 Wal-Mart FLW Tour being held on Arkansas' Beaver Lake. The world's best bass fishermen are competing for a share of the $641,000 cash purse, the largest for a bass tournament in Arkansas history, and $150,000 for first place.

Suffolk is attempting to make the 10-man, first round cut, determined at the end of
Thursday's fishing. The top 10 professional and 10 co-anglers, based on total weight after the first two days of fishing, will advance to the second round of action on Friday. At the conclusion of Friday's fishing, the co-angler competition is completed and the pro field is cut to five. Saturday's final round of fishing will determine the winner of the Wal-Mart FLW Tour Pro Division, based on total catch weight for that day. In addition to $100,000, the winning pro (and co-angler) receive a berth in the Wal-Mart FLW Tour Championship, presented by CITGO, September 22-25, 1999, on Ft Gibson Lake in Wagoner, Oklahoma.

The Pro Division leader at the end of Thursday's action will receive 75 points in the Land O'Lakes Angler of the Year race. The professional angler accumulating the most points through the second day of the Forrest Wood Open, sixth stop on the tour, will be featured on a nationally-distributed, special edition box of Wheaties. Superstar angler, Denny Brauer, was the first angler in history to grace the famous cereal box, having won the 1998 race.

Darrell Stevens of Roseland, Virginia, is leading the 165-man co-angler field with a five bass catch weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces. Co-anglers are competing for a share of $101,000, with $20,000 going to the winner. The big bass on day one was caught by Mickey Bruce of Buford, Georgia. His bass weighed 5 pounds, 8 ounces, good for $750. The big bass winner for the tournament will receive $1000 from Coca-Cola. The overall winner for the season will receive $5000.

Kansans Chapman and Kingsley will compete
World's best anglers set for fourth FLW Tour stop on Beaver Lake
GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (March 29, 1999)
-- Brent Chapman of Lake Quivia and Cecil Kingsley of Lawrence will be joining the world's best professional bass anglers as they head for Bentonville, Arkansas, to compete in the fourth event of Operation Bass' $4 million, 1999 Wal-Mart FLW Tour, the Wal-Mart Open, April 21-24 on Beaver Lake. Chapman placed third in the third Central Division BASSMASTER tournament held at Table Rock March 25-27. Kingsley was in ninth place after the first day of the previous FLW tournament held at Lake Lanier in Georgia.

The Beaver Lake tournament is the fourth stop of seven for the tour that is the most lucrative competitive bass fishing series in history, and the richest tournament in Arkansas history.

The $641,000 Wal-Mart Open, features 300 world class anglers (150
professional and 150 co-anglers) fishing in a four-day, elimination
competition, with a $150,000 first place cash award at stake. The all-star
field of anglers, comprised of the sport's biggest names, will compete the
first two days for one of 10 slots (10 pros and 10 co-anglers) available in
the second round of fishing action. On day three, the 10 pros and 10
co-anglers start over, fishing one day for the heaviest limit. The top five
pros, based on total weight, advance to the final round of competition on
Saturday. Co-angler competition ends after day three. First prize in the
co-angler competition is $15,000.

In addition to $150,000, the winner earns a berth in the $450,000 Wal-Mart
FLW Tour Championship, presented by CITGO, September 22-25, 1999, on Ft. Gibson Lake at Wagoner, Oklahoma, where the winner receives the largest first place cash award in pro angling - $250,000. The highest-finishing Ranger boat owner in each tournament will qualify to enter the $3.5 million Ranger M1 Millennium tournament, the richest bass event in history, with a $1 million first-place cash prize at stake. The Ranger owner who catches the largest bass in each division over the course of the season will also qualify for the Ranger Millennium tournament.

Indoor weigh-ins will be held daily from 3 - 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Prairie Creek Marina in Rogers. Friday and Saturday's weigh-ins will be held at the Bentonville Wal-Mart Supercenter. Friday's weigh-in begins at 5 p.m. Activities on Saturday begin at 11:30 a.m.

of Clewiston, Florida, and Mark Hardin of Canton, Georgia, are tied for

with 155 points, followed by Craig Powers of Rockwood, Tennessee, with 150 points. The Land O'Lakes Angler of the Year will be featured on a special edition box of Wheaties later in the year.

The third and final days of each event feature the top pros fishing from
the new Ranger Comanche fishing machines. The boats represent the newest advances in craftsmanship and technology, and feature dynamic, NASCAR-like, sponsor-centered styling from bow to stern.

All tour events are scheduled to be televised on ESPN approximately two
weeks after the tournament. The Wal-Mart Open will be televised on ESPN,
Saturday, May 8 at 2 p.m. EST.

(presented by Evinrude Outboards), Memphis, Tennessee, May 19-22; Lake St. Clair (Forrest Wood Open), St. Clair, Michigan (presented by EverStart
Batteries), June 23-26; Ft. Gibson Lake, Wal-Mart FLW Tour Championship (presented by CITGO), Wagoner, Oklahoma, September 22-25.

Winning pros and co-anglers from the first five Wal-Mart FLW Tour events, the top five pros and co-anglers from the Forrest Wood Open, and the top 40 pros and co-anglers, based on points and pounds, in the six qualifying events will qualify for the Wal-Mart FLW Tour Championship.
