MONROE TAKES BUSCH SHOOTOUT
California Pro Finishes Season
with Two Wins in Texas
Oct. 14, 2006 - GRAPEVINE, Texas There's
a reason Ish Monroe is building a house in the Lone Star State.
The Hughson, Calif., pro won his first Bassmaster
title at the season-opening CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series tournament-
the Battle on the Border- on Lake Amistad in Del Rio, Texas,
in March.
Monroe ended his season Saturday by winning the
Busch Shootout on Grapevine Lake.
The BUSCH Shootout will air Saturday, October 21,
on ESPN2 at 10 a.m. ET. It will reair Oct. 24, Nov. 7,
Dec. 8 and Dec. 30.
"I love Texas, a delighted Monroe shouted
Saturday at the weigh-in at Scott's Landing Marina after defeating
fellow Californian Fred Roumbanis in the final round of the BUSCH
Shootout to win the $100,000 top prize.
Monroe, of Hughson, Calif., who is building a house
in Del Rio, caught five bass weighing 7 pounds, 6 ounces, including
one of about 4 pounds. Roumbanis, of Auburn, Calif., had one
fish weighing 3-3.
"It got really, really tough, Roumbanis said.
"My fish left. They weren't in the same areas. The conditions
were right. Everything was right. I think it came down to a lack
of knowing the lake.
That was the second time Monroe and Roumbanis
finished 1-2 respectively. In the Battle on the Border, Monroe
caught a four-day total of 104-8. Roumbanis was second at 101-13.
Monroe qualified for the BUSCH Shootout with a
catch weighing 34-1 on the third day at Amistad. Roumbanis qualified
with a weight of 28-1 on the final day at Amistad.
The Shootout featured the 10 anglers who weighed
the heaviest single-day catches during 2006 Elite Series and
the three anglers who weighed the heaviest one-day bags at the
2006 Bassmaster Classic, the 2006 Federation Nation Championship
and the 2005 Open Championship.
After fishing Friday, the four anglers with the
heaviest weights qualified to fish Saturday. Denny Brauer of
Camdenton, Mo., led the way at 23-4, followed by Monroe at 15-15,
Kevin Wirth of Crestwood, Ky., at 15-1 and Roumbanis at 14-12.
As the top seed, Brauer fished against Roumbanis Saturday morning
while Monroe and Wirth squared off.
Roumbanis, a second-year pro, shocked the crowd
assembled for the weigh-in by beating Brauer, 57, the 1998 Bassmaster
Classic champion and the 2006 Toyota Horizon Winner. Roumbanis
had three fish weighing 5-6. Brauer had two fish weighing 5-1.
Monroe had a five-fish limit weighing 6-4 to beat
Wirth, who had one fish weighing 2-14.
"The key is always make sure you come in with
five, said Monroe, who caught his limit by a dam where the water
was flowing, then fished around some docks where he caught a
few more fish.
Monroe went back to the dam Saturday afternoon
and never left. The spot had produced a bass of 7-11 for Monroe
Friday morning and he hoped to catch a limit, then go for a kicker
fish -- a big bass that would boost his weight.
It took him 90 minutes to catch a small keeper
bass on a small plastic worm. Then he switched to a Tru Tungsten
jig with a grub catching a number of bass.
"That's a problem that I,ve had for
a lot of years. Finishing, Monroe said. "It comes to a point
where you have to close. You catch five, then you have to go
out and catch that kicker fish. I feel that's going to help my
career.

Brauer had the best overall day Friday on the first day of the
BUSCH Shootout at Grapevine Lake.
The 57-year-old needs two good half-days Saturday
to claim the $100,000 first prize.
The 13 anglers who qualified for the unique tournament
fished Friday morning and Friday afternoon. The four anglers
with the heaviest total weights fish again Saturday morning.
Brauer, of Camdenton, Mo., caught five fish weighing
17 pounds, 12 ounces Friday morning and added 5-8 Friday afternoon
for a total weight of 23-4. He goes head-to-head against Fred
Roumbanis of Auburn, Calif., who rallied Friday afternoon with
two fish weighing 9-15 after catching only 4-13 in the morning
to place fourth at 14-12. Saturday,s other match pits second-place
Ish Monroe of Hughson, Calif., who had 15-15, against third-place
Kevin Wirth of Crestwood, Ky., who had 15-1. Aaron Martens finished
fifth at 13-5.
The two winners of the Saturday morning bracket
matches fish Saturday afternoon, with the angler catching the
heaviest weight claiming the $100,000 top prize. Everyone else
gets $5,000.
The season-ending Shootout features the 10 anglers
who weighed the heaviest single-day catches during 2006 CITGO
Bassmaster Elite Series events, as well as the anglers who weighed
the heaviest one-day catches at the 2006 Bassmaster Classic,
the 2006 Federation Nation Championship and the 2005 Open Championship.
Brauer said he caught his first two fish Friday
morning on a Strike King buzzbait and got the rest pitching a
Strike King jig with a 3X chunk. His best fish all came from
the same spot.
"I thought I had enough, so I didn,t want
to go back to my key area and beat it up, Brauer, the 1998 Bassmaster
Classic champion said of his Friday afternoon game plan. "Then
I got to thinking and said, This could be stupid., These guys
are all good fishermen. So I went to my area and there were like
three or four guys in there. My second pitch, I caught a 4-pounder.
Then I left, because I didn,t need to be beating it up.
Monroe weighed 12-4 Friday morning, which included
the big bass of the day at 7-11, which he caught on a crankbait,
and added 3-11 in the afternoon. Wirth had weights of 9-7 and
5-10.
The semifinalists start with a clean slate Saturday.
Monroe said his plan is to go to the spot where he caught his
7-11.
"I,m starting out swinging for the big ones,
Monroe said, who is searching for his second win of the season
after capturing the season-opening Elite Series event on Lake
Amistad. "If I get three big ones, they,ll weigh [a total
of] 12 to 15 pounds and I,m going to leave and look for places
to fish for the afternoon.

TEXAS' GRAPEVINE LAKE ANNOUNCED
AS SITE OF 2006 BUSCH SHOOTOUT
13 Anglers, including Denny
Brauer and Mike Iaconelli, Vie for $100,000 Grand Prize
Oct. 12, 2006 - GRAPEVINE, Texas Thirteen
anglers arrived at airports Thursday morning with no idea where
they would find themselves this afternoon. Unlike other tournaments,
packing tackle for the BUSCH Shootout was a guessing game. But
once they landed at the Dallas/Forth Worth International Airport,
they would learn the Shootout's location: Grapevine Lake.
Much like the first editions of the prestigious
CITGO Bassmaster Classic, the location of this two-day specialty
event taking place Friday and Saturday was kept secret.
With CITGO Bassmaster Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli, Toyota
Horizon Award winner Denny Brauer and other Bassmaster Elite
Series winners such as Greg Hackney and Ish Monroe, competition
is tough.
"We're thrilled with these 13 anglers who
qualified for the BUSCH Shootout," said Jim Lukowski, director
of marketing, value brands, for Anheuser-Busch, Inc. "I
am excited to have the best anglers in the business going head-to-head
on Grapevine Lake."
With a successful CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series
season in the books, anglers will look to bolster their earnings.
The angler who wins the event receives $100,000 and each of the
other 12 anglers receives $5,000. Anglers will compete under
a special elimination format.
The BUSCH Shootout will air at 10 a.m. ET on Oct.
21 on ESPN2. It will re-air on Oct. 24, Nov. 7, Dec. 8 and Dec.
30.
Elite angler John Murray of Phoenix, Ariz., won
the inaugural BUSCH Shootout in 2004, which was held on the James
River and housed at Anheuser-Busch's Kingsmill Resort and Spa
in Williamsburg, Va. In 2005, Elite angler Brent Chapman of Kansas
won the $100,000 prize on Table Rock Lake out of Big Cedar Lodge
in Kimberling City, Mo.
The Elite Series anglers with the heaviest daily
catches throughout the season have been monitored with the top
10 moving on to the BUSCH Shootout. Joining those 10 are the
anglers with the heaviest daily catches from the 2005 Bassmaster
Open Championship, the 2006 Federation Nation National Championship
and the 2006 Bassmaster Classic. A complete list of anglers can
